Poll Tax Receipts Show Sharp Drop in Alabama Disfranchisement
Montgomery reports that over the past year Alabama voters paid only about $101,645 in poll taxes, a drop from $155,573.23 the prior year as thousands failed or refused to pay. About 114,000 citizens were required to pay, but roughly 67,000 did so. The auditor notes total receipts rise in other tax categories and a larger general fund for 1903.

In Fruithurst on October 8 a man named Kelly Crews posed as a revenue officer pressuring Mrs Asseltine to mail a bottle without wrapping. He was captured by Collector Battles, pled guilty, and jailed awaiting U.S. court. In Sioux City Thomas Ward of Lamars National Bank pled guilty to embezzling $13 000 and was fined $12 000 with thirty days to serve, then discharge possible if no assets exceed $20.

Dayton Woman Kills Husband in Self Defense
In Dayton Ohio on October 8, Katherine Lane killed her husband W H Lane during a domestic dispute at their restaurant. After striking her, he chased her and she grabbed a knife, stabbing him in the heart and killing him instantly. She collapsed beside the body as police arrived.
Man Dying Prisoner Dies After Long Trial Delay
George Jones, jailed since January 18, 1895 for murder of Lorenzo Sutilo, died in Oakland county jail at 93 after eighteen years awaiting trial. Convicted June 5, 1885, sentenced to hang July 11, but won a new trial. He suffered a stroke before the retrial and remained bedbound as delays continued.

Randolph is Penniless After Colombian Release
Judge Francis Randolph, freed from a Colombian prison after a death sentence for alleged murder, sent a cablegram seeking funds. About $500 was raised and credited at Park Bank in New York. He plans to return to Montgomery where pending cases may be dropped, and awaits settlements totaling around $70,000 from uncle Corbin's estate and other claims.
