Pittsburg report notes few idle freight cars despite recent deliveries. Officials estimate under 25 000 idle cars nationwide, down from 413 000 on April 1 1908, reflecting investment exceeding 4 million dollars.
Interstate pathfinders traveling from Birmingham to Atlanta were met by local delegations and guided via Greensport Truss Ferry Estaboga and White Plains into Anniston. County officials and local leaders accompanied the party, with plans to continue toward Tallapoosa on the next leg.
In Washington on October 5 the eighteenth annual meeting of the Association of Military Surgeons opened at the New Willard hotel. About 150 surgeons from the army navy National Guard and public health service plus foreign delegates from Great Britain France and China attend. He says the state will dry up booze grafters, predicts a 50 plus percent majority, and campaigns door to door to persuade neighbors toward prohibition. He criticizes home searches and cites whisky as a threat to home peace.
A massive prairie fire near Calgary Alberta has burned for nine days. Damages exceed 2 million dollars and are expected to rise. Seven people are reported dead.

G H Churchill and Luther Fowler, both about 16, escaped from the city chain gang last Saturday. Recorder Creen fined Fowler $50 plus costs and Churchill $50 plus costs and sixty days on the streets. Churchill was recaptured in Greensport then at Alexandria and returned to Anniston Monday night. He also faces burglary charges for a break in at Cochran's store.

Chicago paper reports John Walsh must serve a sentence at Leavenworth for misapplying funds. The Federal circuit court today affirmed Judge Anderson’s lower court ruling. Walsh may appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Reports from St. Louis indicate the balloon St. Louis Til was seen over Boonville at sunrise and heading west low on the wind. An unidentified balloon was sighted over Tipton also moving west. Observers believe the balloons altered course during the night.
Hl. C. Bakes and Tom McKinney were rearrested after being econvicted in police court for violating the prohibition law. Each faces additional charges. Bales' trial is set for Wednesday and McKinney's for Thursday. They are held in the city jail without bond.
The Alabama Good Roads Association reports strong statewide interest as preparations begin for a major convention in Birmingham. Governor Comer Senator Bankhead and seven Alabama congressmen have confirmed attendance along with federal road expert D. H. Winslow and railroad magnate B. F. Yoakum. Thirteen counties already named delegates, with every county anticipated to be represented.
Mayor Taylor and a city committee lead a grand display of decorations and entertainment for the president. The program includes a city drive a cornerstone ceremony for the new Y M C A building and a reception at the Union League club after a banquet at the Fairmount hotel.

Washington October 5 the collection of the new tonnage tax of two cents per ton begins under the Payne Aldrich tariff. Vessels from listed Atlantic and Caribbean ports incur two cents per ton up to ten cents per year while other ports saw six cents per ton up to twenty per ton annually. The two cent rate lowers receipts and the Department of Commerce and Labor estimates annual income at about 1 050 000 dollars, more than 500 000 dollars below the prior law.
Public officials engineers and representatives from many agricultural and commercial groups gathered in Asheville for a three day Southern Appalachian Good Roads convention. The goal is to promote a 300 mile network of improved roads in the mountains with linking routes to the Piedmont areas of South Carolina North Carolina Virginia and Tennessee.
