An explosion in Philadelphia's rapid transit system kills nine men and injures many others. The blast causes extensive damage with losses estimated at over 500000 dollars, crippling service and prompting emergency responses.
Seven men killed and fourteen injured in a rapid transit tunnel explosion beneath Market Street at 6 40 this morning. Dozens more hurt by flying debris as a subway line and nearby businesses suffered extensive damage.
