A large-scale strike by Southern machinists is reported with thousands participating. The action targets wage and factory conditions, aiming to press management for better pay and safety standards amid ongoing labor tensions.
Reports to Southern railway officials say over half the machinists at Charleston Atlanta Knoxville Selma Columbia Spencer Manchester and Birmingham are out on strike. Memphis and Alexandria and Lawrenceville shops remain at work with all hands employed. About 500 machinists are out on the Southern system. The reports do not specify the exact number of strikers.
Greenville Alabama May 31 Frank Reaves a Negro who had attempted to assault Miss Ada Mc Millan near Georgiana was lynched yesterday by an orderly mob near the scene of the attempted crime. He fled to a swamp and was attempting to escape on a train when caught. He was fully identified.
A May 51 communication from the secretary of state orders immediate opening of books of subscription for a Montgomery to Anniston railway. The line, to be electric or steam operated, will traverse a prosperous area of Alabama and pass through the gold mining region.
Athens Ala May 31 burglars blew open the postoffice safe at an early hour yesterday and stole 250 dollars. The burglars have not been captured.

At Hillman Station Dr John Paine was shot and mortally wounded by telegraph operator J P Cook yesterday afternoon. Officials say jealousy and alleged chloroform for an exam led to the shooting, with the woman dying and Dr Thomas denying any criminal operation.
