Montcombery May 21 delegates arrive for the Democratic state convention. Hon John B Knox of Calhoun looks set to win the presidency without opposition while Gen Oates and Lomax withdraw. Secretary race becomes the three corner contest among Neil, Julian, and Garrett with Knox supporters claiming a large caucus majority.
The Evening Star received a telegram from Alderman L H Kaplan in Montgomery Alabama May 21 stating John L Knox is a victor without any doubt. He notes that opposition came down.
Citizens from St. Clair and Shelby counties met at the Morris Hotel to discuss creating a new county from northern Shelby and southern St. Clair. The proposed area covers about 400 square miles with Yellow Leaf Creek and Black Mountain, has around eighty miles of railroad, and about 3000 potential voters.
On Wasminday May 21 President O Connell of the International Association of Machinists says reports show 904 firms employing about 30 000 men have signed the nine hour day agreement or reached satisfactory local arrangements.
Cincinnati May 21 Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor told the Associated Press that the machinists strike shows gratifying results and victory awaits the strikers. He cited many employers adopting the nine hour day and noted unity among union and non union workers signaling eventual success.
Dr Ayers writes from Shanghai detailing population, concessions, and transport. He notes 750000 residents with about 8000 Europeans, favorable banking rates, and cheap Mexican dollars. He contrasts new Shanghai with the old walled city and describes wheelbarrows jin-rickshas and local travel, housing, and pricing differences to America.
