Death of Capt J M Fleet Narrows Into City History
Capt J M Fleet died at his home north of the city after several weeks illness. He was a leading figure in Avaniston, longtime general superintendent for Woodstock Iron timber lands, and helped transform the area from wilderness to a growing city. A Baptist, he lived at Twelfth and Wilmer until moving to a farm north of town. Interment will be at Edgemont cemetery tomorrow at 10 a m with services at the residence by Rev W S Griffin of Peaceburg.

In New York on May 17 Mary Brannigan a 24 year old clerk at Reinhardt’s store was shot twice and killed by Edward Hall 25. The shooting caused great excitement as Hall drew a pistol from his pocket and refused mercy pleas before being arrested.

Deputy Collector J. W. Kitchens Deputy Marshal W. W. Battle and Deputy Sheriff Frank Meharg returned from a raid on illicit distilleries in Randolph county.
