Pretoria May 8 The Volkesraad session ends for 1900 with Kruger opening comments praising Joubert oath fidelity to the Free Staters while insisting they will seek peace with Great Britain. He notes world sympathy and that the republic can fund the war as mines flourish despite ongoing conflict.
A fire at 20 o'clock in Montgomery destroyed Todd's store on North Court street opposite Fleming's restaurant. Stock valued at 10,000 with 3,000 in rance. building owned by P. N. Tyson valued at 5,000 and insured. Todd's stocked with cartridges and explosives, threatening the block before firefighters cleared the debris.
Flames swept five of six acres near Marietta street and Ponders avenue destroying thirty four dwellings and a Ware Furniture Manufacturing three story factory. Loss about 130000 with 40000 insurance. Many residents are low income and face destitution as households were burned and goods damaged.
The jury in the J. M. Jackson vs. the Southern case retired yesterday after Judge Pelham's charge and remains out with no verdict time indicated. Fire at the American Hotel in Geneseo New York this morning killed Lafayette Carney and Sherman De Boray of West Sparta and left an unknown woman dead. Miss Skidmore jumped from a veranda and was seriously injured as the fire trapped guests.
A blaze at the Atlanta Dairy company stables on the corner of Bartow and Luckie streets killed eleven horses and fatally injured two others. Of fifteen horses, four escaped the flames, with two only slightly hurt. The two severely burned were later shot to end their suffering.
Telegraph operators on the Southern Railway reportedly ended their strike after weeks of action. No concessions were reported from the railroad, and the boycott against the Southern would continue.
Atlanta May 8 The city council with one dissenting vote approved a resolution demanding Mayor Woodward resign between May 7 and the next meeting. Unofficial letters from Manila report about 3,000 insurgents burning Bulana in South Luzon on May 4. Fifty Forty-seventh Infantry soldiers were driven from the garrison while many Spanish and Chinese residents were killed.

Mr. Asa Trammell died at his Rome home Sunday night after several months of illness. He was father to B. J. Trammell and Mrs. Josephine Duke, both of this city, who were with him when he passed away. The death was not unexpected after a lingering illness.
