The Boer leader, renowned military genius of the Transvaal Republic, has died after his long fight. His surrender to death marks the end of an era in the region's struggle for power and independence.
A dispatch from Lorenzo Marquese states Gen. Joubert, Boer army commander in chief, is dead. Earlier Pretoria reports suggested declining favor and possible danger, but a March 26 dispatch says he is bed-bound and seriously ill, reducing the likelihood of foul play.
London reports Pretoria confirms General Joubert died at 11:50 last night from stomach trouble.

Officers George W. Kirkley and J H Adams were shot by two white men during a surveillance operation near Third Avenue and Twentieth Street. Both officers, though seriously wounded, are not believed to be in fatal danger. The assailants fled east and west after the 12 05 a m incident.

Washington March 28 Senator Morgan introduces an amendment to the Alaska bill pushing equal mining rights for British English and Russian subjects. The proposal would extend U S mining privileges to these nationals on the same terms as U S citizens in Arctic and Behring sea border provinces.
J A McClusky, longtime superintendent at Lagarde Lagarde Lime and Stone, resigns. John J OBrien succeeds him and takes immediate duties. McClusky may join North Alabama Coal and Iron at Talladega. OBrien is widely known and regarded as fully qualified for the post.
Mayor presided over police court sessions this morning settling disputes among several Darktown maids and others. Two men were fined 5.80 each, a white man 11.50 for code violations, and four white women 11.50 and 6.50. Additional cases were adjourned to tomorrow with total fines and costs reaching 54.10.
John F. Cook has sold his stock of dry goods dress goods clothing shoes and notions to L. J. Hawkins. Hawkins will run a large discount sale beginning Saturday morning as a rapid clearance with inventory already under way.
Baltimore March 28 The Ganther building burned early this morning. Heiser Manufacturing Company and Diggs Curran Co wholesale boots and shoes were the chief losses. Liks Berwanger Co's clothing store also burned. Two boys aged about fourteen to sixteen sought by police. Pratt Yates Bag Company. All kinds of hauling done by Edmondson Anderson phone 35-5.
