City court jury reached a sealed verdict in the City vs J H Duke trial over sidewalk paving costs on West Anniston property. The city sought about eighty dollars. the jury awarded roughly half that plus court costs, noting resisting expenses exceed payment. Twelve similar cases remain, with two set for next Thursday.
President and Mrs Wheeler hosted a reception in Hearst hall at the University of California in honor of Colonel and Mrs Theodore Roosevelt. Mia Ulrich, his wife, met today with her husband’s attorney but would not disclose Ulrich’s location. Washington, apparently recovered from injuries, left today to lecture at Staten Island Academy and at New Brighton.
Rome reports hotels filled as the city prepares for a six month period of the great international exposition marking Italy's semi centennial. King Victor Emmanuel will inaugurate the event with ceremonies featuring war vessels. Many international gatherings follow, including music, geography, public works, sociology, tuberculosis, and peace congresses.
Princeton March 23 A rumor says Mrs Grover Cleveland may marry Dean West of Princeton Graduate School. The potential match links a former first lady with a prominent academic figure, stirring local chatter.
The appellate court newly created by the state administration will convene at the state capital on April 8. Judge John Pelham of this city will leave for the capital next Monday to assume duties, though quarters are lacking. He will keep Anniston as his home and voting place and spend time here when possible. Hugh D. Merrill succeeds him in the circuit, the Heflin attorney who has long resided in Anniston.
Nooga reports a devastating fire at the McLean Lumber Company plant in Chattanooga Tennessee early this morning causing about fifty thousand dollars in damage. The blaze damaged buildings and equipment and disrupted operations. Local fire crews battled the flames through the night to bring it under control.
New York March 23 authorities said the grand jury will hand down six indictments against officials of the Carnegie Trust Company tomorrow.
