Hon. H. D. G. Brothers and Capt. James Crook secured an option on the Jacksonville Land company property, about 8000 acres around Jacksonville. The plan targets a railroad from Jacksonville to Anniston, plus a Jacksonville cotton mill and closer coal access, with Eugene Kelly linked to East & West railroad interests.
Union Associated Press reports disclosures of fraudulent victualing contracts for troops promise a big sensation before peace. Louther, a strong Tory in the House of Commons, has taken up the matter. A further phase shows army officers as deep in the mud as contractors, especially in coal purchases.
Pittsburg dispatch reports the western express engine left the rails as it entered the Altoona yard. Engineer Kauffman was killed and two other crewmembers were badly injured in the wreck today.

Frank Connelly once publisher of the Evening Annistonian and manager of a Noble Street theater in Centerville Bibb county has been pardoned by the governor for twenty one counts of blind tigering. He was fined 1500 dollars and sentenced to 39 months on the state farm. A dangerous condition from dropsy and enlarged liver is noted. The pardon requires he abstain from intoxicants and conduct himself as a good citizen.
W A Smith, a negro wanted in Birmingham on a larceny charge, was arrested early yesterday by Chief Weather. He had been repairing watches and clocks in the suburbs for days, and Deputy Sheriff Marshall returned him to Birmingham last night.

An elevator at the Blakely Printing Co building fell several stories this morning in Chicago. Thirty people were injured. In political news, McCraw led the county returns outside Anniston in the first primary, signaling strong local support ahead of the forthcoming primary vote.

Each subscriber is to act as a committee of one to reach the $100,000 goal, after which a charter and permanent organization will be formed and mill construction begun.
