The Alabama division of the Grand Army of the Republic meets in this city on April 22 at noon. Election of department officers and installation ceremonies are on the agenda. Daniel Tyler Post plans a large banquet for visitors and members, with state encampment meetings likely at the auditorium.
A broken track on a northbound freight train derailed twelve cars near MecElderry's station twelve miles south of Anniston. The wreck damaged tracks and delayed the northbound passenger train for hours. In a separate matter the Alabama National Guard chooses between Col. E L Higdon and Maj. T T Huey for colonel to fill a vacancy left by Col. Tom O Smith. Anniston and Oxford companies support Huey.
March 20 in Tien Tsin reports General Womack refuses compromise offered by Count von Waldersee. Tension rises with all troops under arms and French forces now involved despite officers’ attempts at neutrality.
News from San Francisco reports Dr T W Ayers of Anniston ill during the voyage to join the Baptist Missionary Board in China as surgeon. He was to sail from San Francisco on March 15 but fell ill, delaying departure for a few days. his brother in law Dr LeGrand Birmingham said the illness is not serious and temporary.
Montgomery March 20 The Democratic state convention in Alabama nominated fifty five strong men as delegates to the constitutional convention and endorsed a platform while detailing franchise tax and exemption positions. For delegates at large the winners were John B Knox William C Oates Frank S White and Robert J Lowe. Knox led with over four fifths of votes while White Oates and Lowe received leading tallies. Nominations from senatorial districts followed with lists from Limestone Lawrence and others. Continued on fifth page.
A list of real estate transfers recorded today includes multiple parties such as L J Hawkins and wife to M Mahone and Chas Thomas for block 361 frontage on Fifteenth street with a $700 price, and Leona G Johnson to W P Walden for a portion of the northeast quarter of section 6 with a $100 price. Other transfers involve Mahone and Chas Thomas, Geo E Walden to M P Walden, and Thos Hampson and wife with properties in blocks O and 43, with prices ranging from $40 to $850.
