A blind Mobile woman Mary Morris died after her dress ignited at home in the Fifth Ward. The incident occurred while her baby watched. In Baldwin County a turpentine camp fire killed about sixty people, with Frank Prissler escaping burn injuries and recounting the disaster.
An order was sent to General Chaffee for the evacuation of American troops from China leaving a legation guard of 150 men. The troops will depart by the last of April. Transports Sumner and Indiana will move to Taku to bring troops from China to Manila. The force includes the Ninth Infantry, four troops of the Sixth Cavalry and the light battery once led by Captain Reilly.
In Piedmont last night 16 year old Henry Amberson shot his father M. L. Amberson with a Winchester repeating shotgun after a family quarrel during a drunken spree. The elder man died fifteen minutes later from a leg wound that severed the main artery. Henry Amberson surrendered to Deputy Sheriff Clark. the town recalls the elder Amberson as frequently alcoholic and abusive, while the son is said to have acted only to wound him in the leg.
An advertisement from John F. Cook of the Under Hot Blast office at 141w promotes dramatic bargains including 700 pairs of Drummers' sample shoes at less than cost and 50 rugs reduced from five to two, amid chaotic copy.
Prisoners released by General DeWet say he is mad due to fatigue and anxiety. They report his sleep is irregular and he hides from his own officers, insisting only independence will satisfy him. His whereabouts and possible alliance with President Steyn remain unclear.
