Washington sees renewed talk of President Diaz’s death despite official denial. Rumors claim Ramon Corral seized power while Major General Leonard Wood prepares to lead 20 000 troops on the Mexican frontier. An audience of about 10 000 militiamen is welcomed to Texas maneuvers.
Mexico City officials denied reports that President Diaz died last night after 6 o clock. The rumor likely stemmed from Mexico's embargo on news as of 6:30 pm when wires and cable service were cut. Diaz’s son issued a statement saying the president is in excellent health and may remain secluded. A Taft message helped ease unrest amid Texas troop maneuvers.
Leader less and panic stricken, a defeated rebel force of 300 men formerly commanded by Salome Mezia and Juan Pasma are in flight. The two leaders and 25 soldiers died in a clash with regulars, who suffered heavy losses.
Washington March 9 Republicans move quickly as Democrats prepare for the extra session. James R. Mann of Illinois is being named for speaker, a nominal nomination that also signals leadership aims.
The forecast calls for fair skies tonight and Friday with warmer conditions tonight.

Montgomery March 9 The house committee on temperance reported bills favoring dispensaries in Alabama including Huntsville Athens and Houston county. A veterans home expansion bill passed unanimously. An anti pass law amendment gained passage 64 to 24 after senate amendments. Senate concurred on appellate court bill. School appropriations were raised to 725000 but postponed for further action.
County attorney H D McCarty explains that Jefferson county rulings do not bind Calhoun County and warns against paying Anniston its share of the road and bridge fund. He notes about 18 000 annual county revenue with 15 000 claimed by municipalities, warning a 50 percent split could be disastrous and appalling for conditions.
Wellington County Commissioners approve a new beat centered on Wellington with Beat No 22. Petitions led by Charles D. Kline argue residents can protect themselves via local justice and economy without state expense. Alexandria opposed. B G McClellen defended Part 2 but the motion passed.
County fair committee reports strong subscription progress with many donors pledging fifty dollars each. List includes businesses and individuals from Anniston Oxford Alexandria and Weavers noting continued canvassing toward a completed fundraising effort.
Senator Bourne of Oregon assailed presidential patronage during remarks on the Oregon plan for direct voting at national party conventions. He said ex President Roosevelt used federal patronage to nominate his successor and to thwart the will of the people.
Delegates at the Southern Commercial Congress on March 9 considered The World as a Market for the South. Addressing the second day were M Jusserand John Barrett Hernando Money Charles H Sherrill L D Tyson and John Temple Graves among others. No regular session met in the afternoon, a reception was held.
The plan for a permanent fair association in Anniston will be formed at a noon meeting next Saturday in the courthouse. Immediate steps will be taken to incorporate the association and all interested are urged to attend and participate.
Anniston participants are listed for a Sylacauga Laymen and Pastors Institute in the Talladega district. The March 28–30 program includes sermons, devotional exercises, and sessions on lay leadership, investments, education, and missionary work led by Rev. G. L. Jenkins and other local and district leaders.
