A bloody battle on February 20 near Maria in Lajaba saw 6500 insurgents under Tozeles clash with a small government force. Government troops won with heavy losses on both sides. insurgents suffered 30 killed and 10 wounded while 8 officers and 7 soldiers were killed and many wounded.
The Democratic and Conservative party executive committee of Calhoun County calls a county convention to meet in Anniston on March 14 1901 to nominate delegates for a Constitutional convention and a Democratic State convention. Beat meetings or primaries are ordered for March 9 with ballots, canvassing, and certificates to elect delegates.
Representative Aldrich is named referee in postal matters by the Fourth Assistant Postmaster General, upsetting Vaughan and Dimnick who wanted Alabama patronage after Aldrich’s retirement. Judge Buckley seeks Auditor Youngwlood’s post. The President approves bridges for Mobile and West Alabama Railroad across the Tom Bigbee at Cenopolis and across the Warrior at Walker and Jefferson.
Lord Kitchener reports from Pretoria that General De Wet has moved north of the Orange River and is clear of Cape Colony. Two hundred prisoners were captured along with stragglers. Kirchner’s scouts endured a protracted fight, with twenty casualties and surrender.
Mr. Stiles Watkins, son of Oxanna postmaster George Watkins, recently mustered out from the 7th Infantry in the Philippines, married Miss Annie Cameron at her parents' home in Douglasville, Georgia after arriving from San Francisco via Manila and San Francisco earlier this year.
Hon. KR. P. Thomason and Miss Hallie Thomason arrived home this morning following a several days stay in Montgomery and other locations.
Orlando reports Cat Johnson, 26, living nine miles west, shot his father and mother with a Winchester after they returned home. The father died at the bedside and the mother at the door. Johnson was captured today, previously adjudged insane but believed cured.
