A catastrophic blast aboard the American liner Haverford claims the lives of six crew members. Thirteen crewmen were hospitalized, with rescue teams aiding survivors onboard and ashore.
An explosion aboard the American Line steamer Haverford at Liverpool docks caused a fire that burned two hours. Six crewmen died, thirteen were hospitalized, and several remained in serious condition. Cause undisclosed but suspected spontaneous combustion.
The Old Home week features a life sized statue of Stephen Collins Foster author of My Old Kentucky Home. Funded by pennies from Kentucky schoolchildren and designed by sculptor J L Root, the seated composer statue will move to the new state capital at Frankfort when ready.

Congress at Independence Hall, 129 years since, settled on a design with thirteen red and white stripes and a blue union field with thirteen stars, finalizing the flag on June 14 1777 after debate among Franklin Lynch Harrison Washington and others.
In Cleburne County two Democratic executive committees contend for recognition. Judge A. A. Hurst leads one wing and W. B. Merrill the other. An appeal asks the state committee to recognize Hurst as the legal county committee. Chareau Mal. Jory requests a showing by Hurst at a future state meeting.
In Greenwich on June 14 the Israel Putnam cottage at Put's Hill was formally dedicated as a colonial museum under the Daughters of the American Revolution. The building, once General Putnam's 1779 headquarters, is over 200 years old and was noted as existing in 1729.
A Warsaw court martial has condemned Professors Erivan Radelski and Wicoeski of Warsaw University to death for high treason over their role in promoting Polish independence. The sentence has stirred students and prompted stronger garrison security in the city to prevent unrest.
Robert B Roosevelt uncle of the President died at four this morning at his home in Totus Lake Mayville Long Island. He was seventy seven and had been in failing health since last winter. He was a staunch democrat unlike his nephew.
Lincoln Reachey, aeronaut, visited Washington and landed on the Washington monument grounds after a four mile flight. He circled the monument and proceeded toward Luna Park in Virginia, then brought the craft to a landing at the forward end of the machine after observers watched the crossing of the Potomac.
Judge John H. Disque of Gadsden's city court ordered a special grand jury session Tuesday to investigate homicides and other crimes in the county since March. The same jurors from the last panel will serve, including Ta bor, Towers, Hunt, Weaver, Saxon, Crawford, and others. The inquiry will include the Lagarde murder of Henry Hammond by Ed Taylor and additional recent crimes.
The funeral for Captain James F. Hartsfield who died yesterday morning was held at D B McGee’s residence on Wilmer avenue and interment followed at Edgemont. Rev J D Simpson of the First Methodist church officiated despite poor weather. Survived by three sons James, Mack of this city and Sam of Birmingham.
Thomasville hosts the South Georgia Epworth League for a three day convention with unusually large attendance and a strong program marking one of the best meetings arranged.
At a June meeting the Oxford school board re elected Prof. Jay D. Lane as Superintendent and Miss Donohue and Miss Andrews as assistants. The board also passed a resolution to require regular visits to the school by a board member to encourage pupils and teachers.
