Three Hundred Probably Lost At Cape Nome
Tacoma, Washington, June 13. A letter from Gleason aboard the South Portland gives the first reliable news on the Cape Nome fleet. Dated May 19, it reports the steamer Alpha with 300 passengers crushed in ice on her second attempt to reach Cape Nome from Dutch Harbor. Passengers were restless awaiting the risky May 9 departure. The schooner Annie returned to Unalaska May 18, after passing a 300 mile ice field and finding no sign of the Alpha.
