J T McCain of Glen Addie, a middle aged man almost blind who runs a meat market, fired at foot of a girl from his shop floor. The shot, aimed at tormentors, rebounded and struck seven or eight year old Lottie Hughes seriously. McCain was arrested and a police court hearing set for the nineteenth. bail possible if the girl’s condition permits.
An open air meeting at St Michael's church was held in the quadrangle at noon. The first service of the present series followed last year's start and resumes this year after appreciative remarks. Prof James led the musical portion and the closing hymn Abide With Me, with a deepened sense of worship under the evening hush.

Eugene Moffett a 17 year old boy drowned in 18 feet of water at Snow Creek near the Oxford depot on the Southern railroad division Atlanta and Birmingham yesterday afternoon between four and five. A coroner's jury found he plunged in while wading at a deep mill site. The body was prepared for burial and taken to Pell City for interment by his stepfather.
The Right Rev. John E. Delaney, Roman Catholic bishop of Manchester, died at 3 40 this morning in Nashua New York after an appendicitis operation. Born in Lowell Massachusetts in 1864 he was the youngest bishop in the United States.
The Senate privileges and elections committee disclosed its thirty page report finding Reed Smoot not entitled to a seat. A concurrent minority view argued there are no grounds to expel him. In another report a train wreck at Easton Town killed one fireman and two passengers and injured twenty one others when a smoker car derailed after hitting an open switch.
In Dillonville Ohio on June 11 the M A Hanna Coal Co fails to restart mines as no miners answer entreaties. Early shooting occurs near the tipple with forty shots fired, while watchmen do not respond. Superintendent Sears says strikers aimed to intimidate workers. superintendent Hornickel says strike breakers will be deported and work resumes at all mines.
News from Mrs. W. Cohen in a Birmingham hospital reports a second operation performed yesterday that has greatly reduced her strength and left her condition not encouraging.
Dr. F. B. Gordon, once confined to his Tyler Hill home with rheumatism, has recovered and resumed his medical practice days, showing no lasting ill effects.
In New York on June 11 Judge Scott and ADA Ely agreed with Josephine Terranova’s attorney John Palmieri that the girl bride recently acquitted of murdering her uncle and aunt will be discharged tomorrow. She could not be released today due to lack of guardianship and care, as her mother is poor and her husband will not provide support. No Catholic institutions will accept her, but counsel will arrange a position and ongoing oversight.
U S Treasurer Charles H Treat told Georgia bankers and Florida colleagues at the tenth annual convention of the crusade for cleaner money that smaller currency improves cleanliness. He said issuing more one and two dollar bills will aid the effort as 800 bankers from both states attend the two day session. Treat will be a guest of honor at the banquet this evening.
The closing tent services of Evangelist Swope drew about 2,000 locals despite threatening weather. His measured preaching and urgency moved many to reform as the tent collapsed and he departed for Elmore Missouri, then Texas, with plans to return to Anniston later.
Col H R Shorter resigns as state deputy insurance commissioner to take effect June 18. He leaves to enter the insurance business and has been named Southern representative for a company.
The largest life insurance commissioners in the United States will have headquarters in Birmingham. Col Shorter was appointed to the office in April 1904 and his work has been satisfactory and successful. Commissioner McDavid has appointed his successor but will not disclose the name for several days.

Foley & Co of Chicago introduced Foley's Honey and Tar as a throat and lung remedy. Due to its popularity many imitators with similar names appear. consumers are urged to seek the genuine yellow packaged product and reject substitutes. Elam Ordway and Houser endorse this warning.
Charles L. Tucker, condemned for the Mabel Page murder, was granted a one day respite to receive baptism in the death cell. He again professed innocence as Governor Guild awaits Roosevelt’s reply on petitions to intervene, with execution expected tomorrow.
New York report states Recorder Gaff denied Alvert Patrick’s motion for a new trial in the murder of the aged millionaire Rice. Patrick was convicted in the case.
John Harrington, employed at Louisville and Nashville railway shops, was struck in the eye by a piece of steel. He will be taken to Atlanta for treatment by Fr. M. Nixon tonight.
Miss Mattie Woodruff died this morning in Birmingham and will be buried in Rome Georgia tomorrow. Her remains will pass through Anniston tomorrow morning. She was aunt of Judge Crook and Sheriff Woodruff and has many relatives in this county.
Washington June 11 The railroad rate bill will be taken up in the house tomorrow with a Rules Committee rule to send the subject back to conference. The move is expected to pass after some debate. The session was sparse today.
