Rumors swirl around J Arthur Wood and his relatives as trunks at Union station are held for small excess baggage charges. The man allegedly collected quick loans from townsfolk claiming family visitors and owed sums totaling a substantial amount before disappearing. Residents seek answers and a confrontation with Wood.
Henry Thomas, a Black man, forged a check for 450 from First National bank on the 17th and fled to Tallapoosa Georgia where he was arrested and brought back for trial. Judge Crook bound him over to City court in 250 bond amid incriminating testimony and he remained jailed awaiting a final hearing.
Special to the Star reports Justice David J. Brewer of the U S supreme court will deliver the commencement address at Trinity College closing exercises starting tomorrow.
Partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with mild temperatures and light winds. Forecast calls for comfortable conditions across the area with no precipitation expected.
A Southern freight train derailed at Jenifer after leaving the track and an avalanche of coal buried brakeman Vester Young for five hours. He was found dead by the crew and was about 23 years old unmarried. Conductor Rob A. Freeman described the wreck and stated the cause remains under official review.
G. E. Roper of Silver Run suffered a severe eye injury when a fragment of iron flew up while sharpening a plow. He was treated in Anniston where doctors performed a successful operation and removed the damaged eye.
The United Confederate Veterans will meet in Birmingham Alabama next year after the city won a vote over Atlanta and other Southern contenders during the business session. The approval came as veterans chose their host city for the year.
New York June 1 The appellate division’s ruling granting a new trial to George Burnham Jr prompts fear of wide effect. If final, it will be nearly impossible to convict other Mutual Reserve Life officers in pending cases since indictments rested on the company books. District Attorney Jerome plans an appeal to the Court of Appeals to resolve the status of remaining indictments.
Elyria Ohio June 1 reports say the death toll from the May 30 trolley crash could reach nine as two more injured are expected to die. A special grand jury will begin investigating the wreck on Monday.
Three Chinese provinces are in revolt as the uprising grows with conservative estimates placing rebels at 50,000 and some reports doubling that. Kiangat province reports executions of civil and military authorities and their families. At Pakhoia port the British consul orders all white women to leave.
Frank E. Roberts and J. M. Ragan remain in the county jail as no bonds have been posted. Ragan complained of a poor cot but received a new cot and other luxuries after requests from himself and supporters, while Roberts has not decided on his trial and has not asked anyone to post bond.
The Talladega Springs hotel will open Thursday evening June 6 after delays due to improvements. Thirty new rooms are ready and a modern water works system with baths is being installed. The operators promise comfort, cleanliness and a bountiful table. Anniston residents expect many guests from Montgomery Birmingham and other Alabama cities.
In Richmond on June 1 veterans and visitors thronged the third day of the Confederate reunion. While business meetings occurred, most attendees enjoyed elaborately staged entertainments. Guv and Mrs Swanson will host a reception at the executive mansion, followed by a large auditorium event. Memorial services are set for tomorrow under the Confederated Southern memorial associations with wide church services planned.
In memory of Garibaldi Italy prepares nationwide observances for the 25th anniversary of his death on June 2 1882 Memorial services will be held in cities across the kingdom and a large pilgrimage of patriotic societies will visit the Garibaldi tomb at Caprera.
Paris June 1 the council of ministers discussed the maritime strike noting a serious situation as sailors refuse to man merchant ships hindering trans Atlantic lines. The Prov ence failed to sail from Havre and the navy will maintain postal and passenger service to the Mediterranean from French ports.
The Anniston Turks traveled to Alabama City this afternoon for a matchup with the Dwight Manufacturing Company team. Roberts was slated to face McFarlin on the mound, with Cozart’s regular infield and Strickland, Carter and Klein in the outfield.
United States attorney for the Northern district of Alabama visited Gadsden yesterday to deliver an $11,000 check to Vol. R. TG. Kyle for the Broad and Sixth streets post office site. He filed the deed for record and closed the matter.
City board of education boosts superintendent pay to 820,000 from 1,500 and reevaluates teacher salaries with a new scale. Election of a new superintendent postponed two weeks while welfare policies and the school calendar are set. several teachers’ salaries are adjusted though some are not listed.
James M. Barr president of Woodstock Tron and Steel Co at Anniston and former Seaboard Air Line president has agreed to aid the Jamestown Exposition Company. He will direct the exposition affairs without compensation while continuing his private business. Dates and duration left to him.
The Union Foundry Company, in operation for four weeks, has shipped 12 carloads of material it manufactured.
Zion City and all Christian Catholic Church interests in Zion will be sold under the hammer to satisfy creditors. A court order was granted on petition by Receiver Hatley and sale will proceed once disputes over Dowie's personal property are settled.
A six year old boy on the presidential train at Albion Michigan was accidentally taken aboard during a handshaking event. Roosevelt calmed him on his knee and told a teddy bear tale while the train continued to the next stop where relatives took custody.
Visitors attend commencement exercises at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Senior class day events occurred and the cornerstone for the new library was laid. Bishop Hendrix will deliver the baccalaureate sermon tomorrow.
Washington June 1 Rear Admiral Caspar F Goodrich ordered to assume command of the New York Navy Yard in relief of Rear Admiral J B Coghlan retired who has been given indefinite leave of absence. Goodrich has long naval service including attache duties with Gen Wolseley in 1882 Endicott fortifications board 1885 presidency of the naval war college Newport command of the cruiser Newark in the Spanish American War and Pacific fleet leadership.
Dr Paul D Vann has sold his Seventh street Tyler hill home to William Bailey of the Anniston Electric and Gas Co. and will move to Los Angeles California. He has practiced in Anniston about ten years and will leave Tuesday or Wednesday for the move.
President Roosevelt sent sincere greetings as John Barrett of the international bureau of the American republics spoke at Seattle Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition ground breaking. Barrett said the event marked Seattle's entry into world prominence and that Oregon Washington and California would form a regional power in legislation finance and commerce.
Hamburg June 1 The steamer President Lincoln sails on its maiden journey to New York. Originally built for the Leyland line the vessel was acquired and altered by the Hamburg company. It displaces about 18 000 tons.
