Reports say the north bound High Flyer collided with a map string and two men were found dead near Valley Milne's tank three miles above Fort Payne. Investigators note both victims appear mutilated and unidentifiable. One man was brought to Fort Payne. bodies buried in one coffin. A foreigner may be among the deceased.
In Charlotte on July 25, Kama Eagle of Troutman and farmer Tom Ervin were wed barefoot on Rev. O. O. Harwell’s veranda after a plan by Orio Harwell. Miss Eagle’s guardian J D Croker opposed the match and pursued them but was thwarted by Harwell. The ceremony by Rev. C O Harwell occurred after all had retired, with no shoes worn.
In Nashville Tennessee the Commercial hotel, a brick three story building opposite the Dancan hotel, was nearly destroyed by fire at dawn. Estimated loss runs to 100000 with many guests escaping in night clothes and without personal belongings. No casualties reported.
In Coal City Georgia 125 felony convicts from the day shift barricaded themselves in the mine shaft after mutiny at the Dade coal mines. State guards shot down ringleaders at the mine entrance during the incident.
From Montgomery comes news that Captain J. M. Elliott of Gadsden will be appointed receiver of the Southern Car and Foundry company alongside Captain T. G. Bush and Thomas A. Gillespie. A petition was filed in U S court and hearings before Judge Thomas G. Jones. Attorneys for creditors favored Elliott’s appointment and the joint receivership is expected to ensure future success of the firm.
Rome reports calm as doctors refute decay claims amid crowds at St Peter's lying in state. Emperors of ceremony, guards and worshippers endured heat and dust while embalmers confirmed preservation, candies smoke darkening faces. Interment set for this evening in St Peter's sarcophagus before final rest in St John Lateran.
A Montgomery report states that by agreement Judge Jones will appoint J M Elliott as receiver of the Souathero Car and Foundry Company, Howake 8, with details to be arranged this afternoon. The ruling follows specified terms and sets the framework for restructuring.
The next session of the State Baptist convention will be held in Anniston during the third week of July. Deliberations will take place at Parker Memorial Baptist church with Rev 8 H Campbell of Troy or Rev W A Talliaferro of Greenville delivering the convention sermon. William A Davis of this city is secretary and secured the gathering for Anniston.
In Rome Ga this morning Anniston and Rome battled to a 2 to 2 tie in a ten inning affair. Batteries were Steele Bullard for Anniston and Patton Lynch for Rome. The final game was scheduled for this afternoon.
Tom Williams a negro and leader of a counterfeit gang recently unearthed here was tried before Commissioner Randolph and bound over to the United States court grand jury in the sum of $1000 on a passing counterfeit money charge. Six men were captured and held without preliminaries. names listed. Special officers aided the swift arrest and photography for government records. RK Watson offered prompt drayage services.
Three young men M Stovall Tracey Matthewson and L H Hopkins reportedly planned a joke on a rail trip from Augusta to Kansas City. They entered a refrigerator car slept inside until Belair eight miles out. The car doors were opened at Atlanta next afternoon and Matthewson and Hopkins were found alive but nearly frozen after about 32 hours with no food or water. Both men from prominent families are around 30.
The City Hardware Co led by President J R Landham will run a harness factory in its new Eleventh street building. Machinery is due next week and initial work will be manual. Within sixty days full machinery will be installed and a wide range of harness and strap work will be produced. Eugene Waite, an expert from Lawrencebarz Tenn, arrives to head the harness making department.
