Anniston Chamber Plans for 35000 Troops Camp
A big mass meeting at the county courthouse last night endorsed a goal of 1000 members for the Anniston Chamber of Commerce while pledging cooperative efforts to prepare for 35000 soldiers arriving in camp. Montgomery July 20 Special Work will start immediately on a divisional training camp for the army, contracted to Algernon Blair of Montgomery with a maximum ten percent profit. About three thousand workmen will be employed, and the payroll is expected to exceed one million dollars monthly. Calhoun Men Drafted as U S Selective Service Begins
Washington July 20 Secretary Baker drew the first number for the new national army and announced the draft will be fair. Calhoun County’s gross quota is 483 numbers, with 137 names to be drafted due to prior large service. The process will continue through the first 187 numbers and is published by telegraph with books of 11 pages prepared for exemption boards.
