Between 30 and 40 persons are reported killed in a collision between a Pere Marquette special excursion train from Tonia and a freight train at Salem Michigan at 10 am. Dispatches say 30 bodies have already been taken from the wreck.
Official dispatches list 22 dead and 45 injured with more bodies feared in the wreck. The 12 car crowded excursion train had seven crushed cars and engines and three freight cars damaged. Surgeons and nurses were summoned as a relief train left Salem and a wrecking crew was dispatched amid reports of a looming disaster and unclear orders.
Peoria plans a bronze heroic statue of Col Robert G Ingersoll in Glen Oak Park to commemorate his military and civil career. Designed by Frederick Ernest Trieber of New York, the statue stands with Ingersoll in everyday dress and will be unveiled by the Ingersoll Statue Association after rapid fundraising reaches ten thousand dollars. The unveiling is to be attended by veterans of the Eleventh Illinois Cavalry once commanded by Ingersoll.
Forecast for Anniston and vicinity calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Sunday with no precipitation expected. Expect light winds and mild temperatures as skies remain mostly clear.
Logan county supports purchasing land for a Kenton State Park in eastern Logan County to memorialize Simon Kenton. The proposal has strong backing from public figures across Ohio and may be acted on by the next legislature. Kenton spent his final years in Logan County and is linked with early western settlement and Kentucky history. He served in Dunmore’s spy campaigns, joined Clark’s expedition, fought in Kentucky campaigns, led Ohio militia, and died in old age seeking justice for lands he believed were his.
Mr W A Hughes of the Southern Express Company has been confined at home for several days due to illness. His many friends express hope that he will be back to himself soon.

A dispatch from Tapa Chula reports Plutarch Bowen an American was allegedly kidnapped from Mexican soil by Guatemalan troops and shot. Bowen faced treason charges against President Cabrera's administration, with his executors claiming Guatemalan origin.
On the fourth anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s death a solemn mass was held at St. Peter’s Rome. The vast church welcomed high church dignitaries foreign diplomats and numerous pilgrims and tourists eager to view the Pope and cardinals who officiated. Pope Pius blessed the catafalque and prayed for Leo XIII.
Friends on the Anniston public schools board claim Mr. Murphey has been duly elected to superintendent by plurality on the first ballot in the absence of a majority rule. Opponents say no election occurred and the board chairman ruled otherwise, leaving the contest unresolved.
In Carleruhe on July 20 the defense for Prof. Haul charged the judge with bias and said the proceedings were a conspiracy to convict. The attorney sought a postponement to obtain a key witness, an ex-valet who vanished on the murder day.

Mr. James H. Garth of 1400 Quintard avenue was seriously injured by falling from a streetcar at Tenth and Noble streets about 11 o clock. His knee is fractured and internal injuries are feared after he rode on the running board to find a seat and the car started suddenly.
Nf. N. Patrick, shop committeeman for the Stove Platers union, says there is no strike at the Wilson stove works. He notes the plant is closed temporarily but will resume in a few days and the report overstated a strike by stove platers.
