A burglar forced entry through a north window at Bass & Heard, formerly Shellnat's Trade Palace, stealing cash and merchandise worth an undetermined amount. The thief used a fire escape section, tried on shoes, and accessed the basement to seize money from the cash drawer, leaving a lamp lit. Police are investigating.
The Anniston and Oxford Rifles returned this afternoon from Montgomery where they were encamped with the Third regiment of the Alabama National Guard for a week. Both companies acquitted themselves well in camp with the Oxford company receiving a compliment from Governor Jelks on review. Captain D Houston Smith of the Calhoun Rifles served on the court martial to investigate military infractions. Major Daniels commanded the second battalion, with Captains Bryant Shelpatt and Tom Cooper of the colonel's staff accompanying. The camp instruction is expected to yield much good.
Cable dispatches from Rome report Pope Leo XIII failing rapidly with very weak pulse and low temperature. Bulletins state organs ceasing and nourishment stopped as he sinks toward death. Crowds and visitors, totaling sixty seven, taxed his strength as relatives are moved and consciousness wanes.
The United States versus Fletcher Turner over peonage of Glennie Helms ended with a 6 to 6 hung jury and discharge. Judge Jones condemned jurors who defied instructions and noted the case involves a white man and a Black victim. Turner will face a new trial. other proceedings are postponed to August 3. Champlain’s Tablets advertisement follows.
July 14 Mose Montgomery crowds gather for the governor's review of Third Infantry at Camp Joseph B. Graham. Company I of Oxford praised for its exemplary showing and ordered guards in each car to prevent further disturbances. Also reported is the court martial verdict for Second Lieutenant F M Long, fined £200 or six months in Montgomery County Jail.
Montgomery July 14 Governor Jeiks appoints Col HL Mallory of Selma as trustee of the Alabama Girl's actuarial school to succeed the late Joseph B. Graham of the Fourth district.
A Burlington Iowa locomotive fireman C W Bellamy describes a near breakdown from weakness and loss of appetite. Prof W Campbell of Lick Observatory in San Jose describes a newly observed comet discovered in Marseilles. It has rapidly brightened to naked eye visibility, shows two long tails, and is expected to reach its nearest sun approach August 27 at about 31 million miles. The object may become the brightest in a decade.
Stamford July 14 It is claimed that a musical note at a high vibration paralyzes the mosquito completely and drives it toward the sound. The discoverers say the insect’s hearing system draws it to the music, and Levy’s fall samples are offered for ordering a suit.
