President McKinley issued a proclamation opening lands ceded by the Wichita Kiowa Comanche and Apache tribes in Oklahoma for settlement. The lands will be opened August 6 at 9 a.m. after a registration period from August 10 to 26 at the Reno and Lawton land offices for both districts.
A suit will be filed in El Reno by C Porter Johnson acting for Kiowa Comanche and Apache Indians seeking to restrain the land office register receiver and surveyors from opening lands under a president order and federal act. The action argues the lands are unlawfully taken from the Indians and asks courts to protect their property rights under the organic act and US Constitution.
