Pettus Age Highlighted As 85th Birthday Noted

Washington dispatch notes General Edmund W. Pettus of Alabama, the Senate’s oldest member, turned 85 today and plans to seek another term. Senator Morgan, over 50, also seeks reelection amid Alabama political jockeying. Pettus’ long career spans Mexican War service, a California trek, Civil War battle leadership, and a later judgeship before his 75th election to the Senate.

State Bar Association in Session Here Today

The twenty-ninth annual Alabama Bar association meeting opened in the county courthouse circuit court room with remarks by President George P. Harrison and Mayor Thomas Kilby. Secretary Alexander Troy said Judson Harmon would arrive at 11 35 and a reception committee was named. Membership added several new lawyers. A nominating committee was chosen, and Judson Harmon was set as the evening speaker with a special 8 o’clock address and reception planned at Judge John B. Knox’s home after Harmon’s talk.

Government victory in Chicago rebate case before Judge Landis

The government won a great victory in Federal court before Judge Landis in Chicago in the Chicago and Alton rebate case. The judge ruled that a one dollar per car track age payment for cars taken from Sewarschild and Sulzberger tracks was a rebate and violated the Elkin Law.

Alpher Ze lays, son of the president of Nicarauga, failed to appear in police court as his case was called. His bail was forfeited after he was arrested on a charge of stealing underwear from a fellow-roomer. He has disappeared and police will take no further steps in the case.
