London reports grand naval pageant planned for Saturday as the body of Queen Victoria travels from Osborne to Cowes. About 3500 troops and 10 000 volunteers to line the route with 20 000 regulars. Wreaths, lighting, and seating to be arranged with no photography along the route.
Scottsboro Jan 30 Broadus cashier of Merchants bank announces plans for a new bank at Stevenson. His seven banks span Tuscumbia Florence Russellville Scottsboro Moulton Courtland and Stevenson forming the state's most extensive local banking network.
In Middletown New York on Sunday a freight car jumped the track and somersaulted into a field while the rest of the train continued. The two sections briefly separated then coupled again and ran on as if unchanged. Conductor Titus observed the incident from the caboose cupola.
A local sale advertises men's shoes from 4.00 down to 1.10 and ladies and children’s shoes at similar reduced rates. About 300 pairs of women's odds and ends, mainly sizes 3 and 4, will be cleared out at take any offer prices as part of clearing stock.
A north bound freight train on the Alabama Mineral at Talladega Creek derailed this morning. The caboose and a box car fell into the creek and became stuck in the mud on their ends. No crew injuries. The north bound passenger train due at 1:45 could not pass. passengers were transferred. The south bound train turned back and is expected about 50 clock.
Ninety five people visited the foundling asylum on Randall's Island since Saturday morning to view 200 babies under two years old. The superintendent notes many applicants are prominent, including a well known actress, but none could take a child home yet due to legal formalities.
Hon. 8. J. Bowie received a telegram from Wiley Tunstall in Montgomery announcing that his father, Hon. W. C. Tunetail Sr., had been confirmed by the Senate as a member of the State Railroad Commission. Col. Tunstall's name was sent to the Senate and promptly confirmed.
St. Petersburg Jan 30 Count Tolstoi the eminent Russian novelist and social reformer is again seriously ill. His physicians and close associates have despair of his recovery and an early death is expected.
A reunion of Spanish American War veterans from the First Alabama regiment will be held in Anniston during May. The event gathers several hundred veterans for what organizers expect to be a pleasant gathering in the city.
Col. R H Cobb launches the R H Cobb Investment Co a new real estate and investment firm in Anniston starting tomorrow. Offices are ready in the building shared with Anniston Lime and Stone Co on Tenth street near the Wilmer Hotel. Cobb, a prominent Alabama figure, serves as Pan American exposition commissioner and aims to boost Anniston’s development and 1920s real estate demand.
A renewal deal closes in Birmingham binding four Walker County coal companies Virginia and Alabama Coal Southern Coal Deer Creek and Sloss Sheffield with B D Wood and Sons of New Orleans to ship 150 000 tons of coal between February 1901 and February 1902 The Southern Railway will haul from Walker County mines to New Orleans via Greenville Mississippi River The same firms are negotiating with Southern Pacific for 100 000 tons in the next year and expect completion soon.
Real estate transfers recorded include Joan H. Cooke and husband to Chas B Cooke for a lot in block 12, J F Kyser Co and C F Malone to John M Stewart for 200 acres in section 9, W D Smith and wife to Della Williams for 146 acres in section 33, all with specified considerations. Anniston Ice Co advertises coal supplies and a local phone line.
The judiciary committee ruled Congressman Richardson of Alabama may receive pay only from his election date August 6, 1900. Speaker Henderson supported delaying warrants for the term, while previous congressman Wheeler’s salary from March 4, 1899 was cited. The panel's vote favored August 6, ten to five, and efforts may seek to amend for a June 23 start.
Walter McGee and Lena Avery were arrested on Tenth Street near Max Marcus store by Mr. R. L. Sivile on a warrant charging assault with intent to murder. They allegedly stabbed a woman in Le Grange last Sunday night. Chief Prather learned they were moving west on the Southern but had arrived the night before. They will be carried back to Troupe County tonight.
