London reports seven days of fighting left Boer positions intact and General Ballaer's army weakened by 706 men, with Spionkop losses unmentioned. Reports of a suppressed Buller dispatch feed unease as censorship and damaged cables hamper full casualty disclosure.
London January 27. The Times prints Frere camp dispatch dated Wednesday morning. The Boers are intrenching and bringing forward fresh guns as they extend their front line about ten miles. the correspondent notes the positions shortly before Spionkop’s capture became known.
A military report describes a ten mile front with the hope to break the Boers at midline. Prisoners claim the defenders will not permit an advance to Ladysmith and will exhaust efforts to halt the assault before open country.
El Paso Texas January 27 Mrs John D Rich alias Mattie D Rich a Chicago woman surrendered to Mexico to be tried for the murder of her husband in Jatirez last May was found guilty by the Mexican court and sentenced to fourteen years in prison The finding read in her cell as she could not attend due to a broken leg Her lawyers D A Richardson and Antonio Balda rama and court officials were present The woman collapsed and yelled when the sentence was announced and later asked pardon The defense may appeal to Chihuahua and Governor Ahumada may grant a pardon if the lower court ruling stands A nitrate acid and poisons were found in her cell She had threatened suicide if convicted and will be imprisoned at Chihuahua.
