London dispatch says four Boer generals Botha Prientsloo Grobler and Dewet rush to reinforce Cronje as surrender rumors spread.
London February 24 Union Associated Press reports Durban despatches claim Ladysmith is relieved and Boer general Cronje with about eight thousand men has surrendered. Kitchener and Cronje are said to be slightly wounded in the Modder River battle where seven hundred Boers were killed or wounded.
London officials report no news of the alleged surrender of Gen. Cronje and express little credence in the Durban dispatches. The War Office received no confirmation as of 3 p.m. in London on February 24.
A compact catalog lists assorted low priced goods with ten cent prices. Items include soap, spools, pins, paper, needles, stockings, gloves, elastic, suspenders, ties, brushes, thread, shoe polish, belts, buckles and cologne. The tone resembles a period newspaper ad offering bulk bargain items.
British steamer Bath City struck at Lundy Island last night and sank. Half of her crew were saved, with others reported missing. The sinking was confirmed by the Union Associated Press in London on February 24.

New York republicans expect Cornelius N Bliss to be nominated for vice president at the National Republican convention if New York offers a name. Bliss would accept if chosen, though he will not publicly promise acceptance.

Alderman J. H. Castleberry died at 1 a m after two weeks of pneumonia at his aunt’s home in Oxford. Surrounded by his mother and siblings, he passed as relatives traveled from Talladega. Mayor Henderson was at his bedside. Funeral set for tomorrow with burial in Talladega. he served five years on the city council and was noted for discretion and steadiness.
