The Democratic County Executive Committee meeting was postponed due to inclement weather and absence of members. Chairman Henderson was absent because of Mrs. Henderson illness. Col Ed Caldwell presided in Beat 1. Next Saturday at 12 o clock the meeting will be held with proxies urged for attendance.
Effective October 7, the Choctaw Route will run three trains daily between Memphis and Hot Springs Ark. Double daily service to Indian and Oklahoma Territories, with connections to Southwest Missouri Kansas Texas and the West.
Erastus K. Shaw, in county jail, denies murdering his wife at Gilmore's restaurant. He reacts to a Florida newspaper account, claims he did not know of the murder charge until today, and questions the warrant as jailer Tom Seff observes his agitation and confusion.
Mr W D Hood of the Lee's Mill area four miles southeast of Oxford died yesterday of pneumonia after a three day illness. He was seen in Oxford Tuesday and the death shocked friends. The remains were buried at Bethlehem burying ground this afternoon. Hood was a member of the Oxford Masonic lodge and Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Ten of thirteen enslaved miners trapped in the hospital mines were rescued around six this morning. Three are believed dead as caps floated in the water. Rescued men are cared for by authorities. bodies of the missing were not found. Rescue efforts continued overnight led by Prof. George Wilkins amid a crowded, anxious scene.
Mr J D Probst of Inglewood New Jersey died suddenly at about age 58. A former Woodstock Iron Works president and longtime director and major shareholder, he also served as a director of L N and Southern Pacific Railroads and was a leading financier. He often visited Anniston and was esteemed by local leaders.
The Birmingham Ledger reports Colonel Thomas O. Smith has tendered his resignation from command of the Third Regiment National Guard. His successor is not named and will take effect once appointed, with men from this and adjoining counties comprising the unit.
New York reports a feverish market as English traders push prices higher while Americans celebrate, with the English market showing a net 3 to 4 point advance since Thursday. Active months leaped 12 to 15 points at the opening, signaling renewed demand despite the holiday mood.
Governor Samford names Gen Louis V Park to a new brigadier general post in the Alabama National Guard. Athens Agricultural School trustees are reappointed Dr Theo Westmoreland and Dr R Phillipe. Probate Judge J Kampe of Lawrence seeks at large delegate to the constitutional convention with four seats filled by five announced candidates from Jefferson Calhoun Montgomery and Lawrence counties.
