Anniston plant of the Southern Car & Foundry company received orders for two hundred new cars. Work starts immediately as fifty stock cars for Southern Railway and fifty flats for the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf are scheduled. A large one hundred car order comes from New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad, with more likely on the way to keep the plant in continuous operation.
The Court of County Commissioners yesterday elected Mr. W. P. Acker county attorney to succeed the late D. Brothers. Mr. Acker enters at once upon his duties. The appointment is praised as excellent, reflecting his prominence and ability as a lawyer.
Pekin February 14. Emperor Kwang Su rescinds the demand that condemned Chinese offenders commit suicide. He says the joint note required only proportional punishment, proposing banishment for less guilty ones while envoys insist all deserve death. No immediate settlement if views do not change.

Friends of Lieutenant Richmond Pearson Hobson in New York plan a six piece silver service engraved with scenes from his bottling experiment at Santiago. The tray inscription credits his bravery in the sinking of the collier Merrimac in Santiago harbor on June 3, 1898.
The country home of Mrs. G. Armentrout, three miles east of Oxford, was destroyed by a fire at about 4 am. All family members escaped unharmed. The blaze likely started from a fireplace. Friends in Anniston express sympathy. it is unclear if the home was insured.
Will Williams, arrested at the union passenger station by Chief Dodd and Officer Herron, suspected of stealing shoes from a box car at the coal chute. Police observed him. he fled but was captured after a short chase. Several pairs of shoes were recovered from his trunk.
In Birmingham on Tuesday night Charles Higgens a life term convict from Bullock county was killed and George Harris a twenty year prisoner was wounded as guards opened fire during an attempted escape at Pratt Mine convict prison. Six prisoners including Higgens and Harris were near the mine gate when a cordbell alarm brought guard P B Allen to the scene. As the prisoners climbed the gate he fired. None escaped.
Editor Jourd White reports finding more diamonds in Cleburne and threatens to overwhelm newspaper boys. The Standard News notes G. W. Bragg uncovered a new bed of diamonds on his Edwardsville farm and expects a basket ball soon to exhibit. The diamonds may travel to the Alabama Press Association meeting with editors.
Carrie Nation, under bond, leaves Chicago for Topeka to face trial in Kansas capital for her activities there. She warned that once home cleanup is done she may return and take action if authorities fail to act, threatening souvenirs in her own terms.
