A San Andres mine explosion in the Sierra Madre near Durango Mexico kills 87 people and injures many. The blast from stored dynamite and a fire started by crossed electric wires tore off the mountain top, flinging residents above the mine into pieces.
A handsome upright Star piano, nearly new, originally $400, offered for $200. Call T. W. Ayers to arrange. Also a brief ad for Rex Mott’s Chocolies and Laxative Quinine cold cure with a cheery disclaimer.
John J. O’Brien died at his West End home at 11 o'clock after a long illness of consumption. A Knoxville, Tennessee immigrant who settled in Anniston in the 1870s, he served as general superintendent of Lagarde Lime & Stone until health declined. He leaves a wife and six children, and he is survived by brothers P H O’Brien J O’Brien W N O’Brien and sister Mrs. Robert McArdle. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery tomorrow afternoon with Catholic rites at 3 o'clock led by Rev. D A Brady.
The Alabama Consolidated Coal and Iron Co owner of the Ironaton Gadsden Mary Lee furnaces buys 1200 acres near Gadsden with a three foot seam of red ore. Daily output exceeds 200 tons as full operation continues. Purchases connect with nearby furnaces lowering freight and expanding capacity.
Richard Smith, a black youth arrested on an assault warrant in West End, was ordered imprisoned without bail by Judge Crock. The assailed white boy, Bird, died from injuries. The charge was upgraded from assault to murder pending grand jury review. Two other cases were continued until next Friday.
The Evening Star quotes John Shelnutt proprietor of the Trade Palace declaring he has not sold his business and that morning reports of a sale were unauthorized. He notes talks with some merchants about a possible big mercantile company but no deal has occurred and none is likely. He says if a Shelnutt Mercantile Co. is formed the public will be informed.
A brief item notes a product named One Day Cold Cure from Merrotts Chocolates offering laxative quinine as a remedy for cold symptoms including headache and sore throat.
Vine land New Jersey reports a remarkable infant, Me. and Mrs. Josiah Mungan’s daughter weighs 7 months old 70 pounds at six months and fluctuates wildly from 104 pounds at birth. She has a strong grip and teeth, and is regaining size after a dramatic weight loss. Mrs Munyan breastfeeds and argues against frequent bathing as a parenting theory.
London reports the king afflicted with cancer of the throat with no hope of recovery. Sir Felix Simon attends the king and confirms the dread disease runs in the royal family. The Telegraph says specialists in the empire recognize the prognosis as grim.
Thomas M. Curry tendered his resignation as chief clerk in the freight office of the Southern Railway. The resignation takes effect at close of business tomorrow. He recently joined Curry & Co with B Rouse and will devote time to that firm and another line.
