Montgomery February 2 Representative Pettas of Limestone introduced a joint resolution in the Alabama House appointing a committee to invite David Bennett Hill of New York to address the legislature. The bill praises Hill as a distinguished Democrat. Hill plans to visit Texas in February and may be the 1904 Democratic presidential nominee.

Union Pacific Scoops in Sunset Route Control

New York February 2 An Southern Pacific under Harriman announces transfer of Southern Pacific control to a syndicate led by Union Pacific. The deal creates a transcontinental route from San Francisco to Chicago or Atlanta via Union Pacific lines and Illinois Central connections. Holdings of Speyer and Company and Huntington interests are included. The price is not disclosed.

Golden Spoon for Mrs Peggy Pendergrass

Mrs Peggy Pendergrass of Oxanna is believed to be Calhoun county's oldest woman at 105, and will soon receive a golden spoon from the Alabama D A R for being a Daughter of the American Revolution. She is the daughter of David Pendergrass who served with a North Carolina Minute Men unit and fought in Georgia under Gen Morgan against Tarleton. The 105 year old is in good health and optimistic about more years ahead.

Provisional government offices in London burned in fire

London February 2. The provisional government offices have been totally destroyed by fire. The Tien Tsin correspondent for the Standard reports the fire was clearly incendiary. Chinese placards have been posted protesting taxes levied by the provisional government.

Man Arrested for Wife Murder Near Oxford

Jim Lee a CDL holder was arrested yesterday afternoon about three miles below Oxford by Conductor Seah Eason. He is wanted in Centerville on a charge of murdering his wife several weeks ago and is in the county jail awaiting extradition.

Longest Train on Record Departs Richmond with Baking Powder

A 105-car train left Richmond over Seaboard Air Line carrying Southern Manufacturing Co Good Luck baking powder. The nearly mile-long consist, made of brand new cars, carried 3 018 155 pounds in 418 183 cases and was photographed by the American Vitagraph Co. The shipment marks the largest single powder consignment for the era and a notable railroad feat.

Odd Fellows Honor Moseley at Talladega Funeral

A large number of Odd Fellows from across the state will attend the funeral of Hon Robert A. Moseley late consul general to Singapore at the Baptist church in Talladega tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. An Amboy group will depart Anniston at 11:30 to join another service. Dr Moseley was past grand master and his memory is honored by Old Fellows. A special Birmingham train will run for the funeral which will be with highest honors of Odd Fellowship.

Property given away by Kruger after Ladysmith relief

Pretoria February 1 ex President Kruger transferred his property to heirs or associates after the Ladysmith relief. The register of deeds shows the transfers were made before the conflict and those involved are not currently active in combat having surrendered or been captured.
