Rey C. C. McDowell has been appointed registrar for Calhoun County succeeding John H. Hall. He will register those who came of age since the last registration and newcomers at the county courthouse during the first five days of January.
Rudolph J. Vrena of North Bergen a U S Army soldier who opposed warfare and refused to follow officers was sentenced to death by shooting in Trenton New Jersey. Brigadier General J S Mallory, retiring commander of Camp Dix, commuted the sentence to clemency and sent Vrena to the depot brigade alongside about twenty other conscientious objectors awaiting action.
Rail workers from engineers to porters discuss government control of railroads. They predict congestion fade and shifts in assignments as consolidation proceeds, with some fearing firings while others accept new roles as “new call’d soldiers” in the national effort.

The Methodist church women hosted soldiers at Mrs D R Luttrell on South Main with a musical program and humorous readings by Mrs Dora Turnipseed and Nell Maddix of Esanville. Ruth Luttrell sang solos while Misses Luttrell helped. Punch and candy were served. Also Miss Willie Clark hosted a rock party for Melba Holdidge with HL Mattison guests and Christmas decor.
