Der 19. The Sunset Limited and a southbound passenger train on the Southern Pacific railroad collided near Uplands in the morning. The wreckage destroyed both trains with coaches burned. Twelve people died and fifty were injured as rescuers rushed to aid the wounded amid the wreckage.
In St Louis a new dirt eating cult grows around William Windsor a Wisconsin native and self styled leader. About 25 adherents meet at the Merchants’ Building to ingest sand daily claiming grit aids digestion while Windsor lectures nightly. Followers purchase sterilized river sand in small bags for 25 cents each.
William Herbert, son of a Leicester English family, lived a wild life in Spokane after earning a $80,000 inheritance. He shot himself after his funds failed, died in an insane asylum from blood poisoning, and his sister refused funeral funds, leaving his body in a mortuary box for nearly a year.
A blast at Jones and Laughlin works in ProrepuRe Pennsylvania today killed eleven men and wounded twelve. Workers had no warning as molten metal sprayed through the furnace area, leaving witnesses horrified and the furnace badly wrecked. The cause of the explosion is not known.
