Residents in Clay and Delta counties were targeted by R H Banks of Memphis who claimed the Mississippi Valley Planter was bankrupt and prizes would be distributed. Subscribers were told they won horses and carriages but needed to pay freight charges. J D Knight reported the scheme after inquiring in the city. Banks is jailed in Memphis.

Postoffice Robbery in Ernest Clay County
Two men, Charlie Banks and Bob Hammell, charged with robbing the Ernest postoffice in Clay County, were brought to the county jail and then to Gadsden for arraignment. The robbery occurred Saturday night at Ernest Cole’s store post office, with the door broken and about $25 in merchandise taken plus all cash. Tragic House Fire Kills Seven Year Old in West Anniston
The seven year old daughter of Mr. Davis Bean died after severe burns suffered when her clothing ignited near a grate while playing with two other children.
