Early county tallies report Jelks ahead of Johnston in countywide vote with Anniston precincts showing large margins. Partial results indicate state executive candidates scattered leads and final canvass scheduled for Saturday by the executive committee.
Special to The Star from Birmingham reports Jelks leading at noon with a 15 000 vote majority statewide and Jefferson County giving Jelks a 700 vote margin. The race featured a key fight over an elective railroad commission with a decisive county showing.
The Calhoun county race for two representatives was tight with Arnold Keith Williams Hanna all showing solid votes. At noon today Arnold leads with 1007 Brock 281 Hanna 484 Keith 742 Williams 958 and both Arnold and Williams have a majority of votes cast.
Unofficial ward returns show Jelks leading governor race with 517 votes to Johnston’s 66. Executives, representatives, and commissioners listed with multiple candidates and tallies including Arnold 365 Brock 28 Hanna 140 Keith 418 Williams 174 Martin 821 Morgan 665 Patterson 47 Weaver 91 Tarvin 246.
telegram from Hon. E. D. Weakley chair of the Jelks campaign reports a statewide Johnston lead margin of about eighteen thousand. Bowie is told Marshall county may flip, with North Alabama counties Jackson Lee Blount Barbour Jefferson Lauderdale Walker all leaning Jelks.
Returns from Birmingham 26 Aug show W D Jelks leading Jos F Johnston for governor by 6 000 to 15 000 with country precincts still undeclared. Johnston strong in rural districts, horse mails may widen gaps. Lieu tenant governor race sees Cunningham for Jelks and Waller for Johnston ahead. second primary probable to decide winners.
