A fast moving blaze engulfed the Great Garner Building on Noble Street early this morning, destroying LER Drug Co and the Handsome Store. Fire crews battled flames as smoke blackened the block and investigators began assessing damage and origin.
A three story brick building on Noble Street owned by R E Garner housing Miller Drug Co and other contents burned in the early hours. Losses total about 40650 with building stock and personal effects destroyed and varying insurance coverage. Firefighters confined the blaze by 2 30 PM while the Miller Drug Co plans to reopen in Sterne's Grocery building once repairs and stock arrivals allow.
This afternoon the Drewry Bros. stock, or as much as can be reached, is being taken from the ruins and stored in the ware room of the Cudahy Packing Co. on Tenth street until the insurance loss can be adjusted. The firm will open in temporary quarters until their building is rebuilt.
