An explosion and ensuing fire destroyed the large hat factory of Frederick Cummings Son & Co in Orange New Jersey. The loss is estimated at 364000 dollars. Over 500 workers are left jobless as investigators probe the blast origin.

The examination of county official books begun last June by H F Montgomery and John Mooring is nearly finished. A report to the commissioners court is due next month probably by the 1st. Montgomery says the auditors have completed audits of the commissioners tax collector and tax assessor books, with probate judge and county treasurer reviews underway.
Special to The Star reports Gadsden officials plan measures at the next council meeting to suppress bucket shops. Following Birmingham style rules, the council may bar stock and cotton exchanges from doing business, framing a dragnet ordinance after a recent privilege tax rise.
Acting Attorney General Charles H. Robb issued an opinion indicating that Mexican labor should be admitted for work in the United States. The memo addresses immigration policy and labor needs amid regulatory discussions.
Albert Truitt known as Red a long time express delivery man died of heart failure on his wagon while en route to the express office about 2 oclock this afternoon. His father fainted on learning of his death at the express office and was revived after a brief stupor. Red had served the company for 17 years and was popular in the city.
In Lewiston Maine August 18 President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor plans a speech to launch a week of anti Littlefield campaigning. He targets Representative Charles E Littlefield in the next month's election with possible appearances by John Mitchell and D J McGilliuddy allies. Littlefield faces a strong GOP majority but campaigns plan to invite Speaker Cannon and other leaders to Maine before polling closes.
A twelve foot tidal wave swept Maui causing widespread damage and harbor losses. The Nualupa wharf was washed away and harbor vessels damaged as a Chilean earthquake is blamed. The death toll is unknown.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles convention in Milwaukee announced Edward Krause of Wilmington Delaware won the grand worthy president ballot this morning, defeating H Davis of Cleveland the current office holder.
Four Louisville and Nashville Railroad officials were bound over on 300 bonds each by U S Commissioner R D Watts to await federal grand jury action. The men include J R Wheeler superintendent at Nashville and former Birmingham appointee, J W Leach former Birmingham chief dispatcher now at Tuscaloosa, M B Drennen Birmingham trainmaster, and E G Evans Birmingham chief dispatcher.

Bristol Tenn Aug 18 Reports say the Clinch Mountain tunnel disaster was exaggerated with only two men killed and two injured. The cause was the giving way of timber supports rather than a cave in.
In Asbury Park New Jersey an Italian man who killed Constable William R Hodges at a dance after an argument over admission fees was confronted by a mob. He was arrested as he attempted to flee by train. Extra police protection was ordered to curb the mob.
Anniston Bass and Heard store goes out of business offering white rock plastering cement barrels at reduced price. Original price $1.50 per barrel cut to 73 cents for quick buyers.
