Miss Carrie Peyton Wheeler daughter of the late General Joseph H Wheeler and Gordon H Buck of New York announce their engagement. The wedding will take place October 2 at the Wheeler family country home in Wheeler Alabama. Buck, a Southern lawyer, has lived in New York for years.
Aug 17 Birmingham men clashed during a dispute over removing freight cars. W H Rogers a paint maker shot M E James foreman of the gas plant of Birmingham Railway Light and Power Co. James died or faces fatal injury. Rogers claims he was struck first. James was brought to hospital unable to speak. doctors report serious condition. Both men are well connected and have large acquaintances.
Private and telegraphic reports describe a terrible Valparaiso earthquake followed by widespread fire causing extensive destruction and fears of casualties. The quake, linked to San Francisco and Chilean lines, disrupted cables and landlines as seismographs logged tremors.
The Southern Railway Law and Industrial Department plans a new service at fairs and expositions in Northern States this fall. Trained agents will showcase South farm, forest, mine and factory output with literature, explaining climate and soil while seeking labor and investment. Displays include jars of peaches and jars of Southern orchard products, lumber, minerals and factory goods.
The Oxford Lake theatre continued to please a large audience with an entire new program last night. The Rodgers were very pleasing and Miss Jeanie Denesse accepted several encores. Harris and Zampa were exceptionally good. Tonight Mr. Harris will sing by request his famous stuttering song.
Information at 10 o'clock remains meagre. The quake occurred at 7 40 last night with several shocks and a conflagration that followed. Details on the fire's extent are not yet known.
Commander-in-Chief R. B. Brown of Zanesville and senior vice William H. Armstrong of Indianapolis head a list of elected officers at the Grand Army of the Republic annual meeting in Minneapolis. Other officers will be announced later by the new commander in-chief.
Minneapolis hosts the official close of a national G A R encampment with praise for the city’s hospitality. Officials and veterans completed business, received congratulations, and thanked local committees for precise, guest ready arrangements. Many visitors depart for home or continue sightseeing to Canada the Great Lakes and beyond.
The twenty-ninth annual American Bar association meeting will be held in Minn on Aug 17 to Aug 19. Judge Alton B. Parker of New York will deliver the annual address, and president George W. Peek of Chicago will give the president's address.
Captain James Crook of Jacksonville and Hon John B Knox lead Calhoun supporters returning from Ozark where a 10 000 strong gathering heard speakers including B B Comer J C Compt on H A Skeggs Walter White and others for various offices. Mayor J E Riley welcomed. M Sollie presided.
The fourth day of the International Typographical Union session concluded with Hot Springs Ark favored for the 1907 convention. Indianapolis was the only other city in contention. A reception with remarks by former Governor Adams and union officers followed by a Western barbecue.
The Birmingham telegraph states the Demopolis captive labeled as R L Dix was not the murderer. Deputy Sheriff A B Cowan was sent when the town chief announced Dix's capture. On arrival the deputy recognized discrepancies with Dix description and the man held did not match.
Attorney General Moody talked of vacancies on the federal bench after a Sagamore Hill visit. He denied discussing Standard Oil prosecutions and said an announcement will come from Secretary Loeb when ready to fill federal judgeships. A new Alabama judge was among discussed matters.
Mrs Emeline Jamison died at 2 pm at the home of her son in law T F Newsman 113 West Seventh street She was a longtime member of the Christian church She is survived by Mrs Newman Miss Mary V Jamison and Lawson H Jamison Short services will be held here by Belt White and the remains sent to Aberdeen Mississippi for burial
Montgomery Aug 17 last of the supplies for the Democratic primary to be held Aug 27 were shipped by J K Jackson of Montgomery assisting Chairman H B Maley of Selma. He urged county chairmen to telegraph if short of ballots or supplies. Two ballots will be used the State ballot on blue paper and the county ballot on white paper. Both texts are brief.
James N. Challen, a prominent and well connected 22 year old in Tuscumbia, Alabama, killed himself with a 38 caliber revolver. He placed the pistol to his temple and died after lingering unconscious until 3 o clock. No reason for the act is given.
