A hospital movement begins in Anniston to establish a nonsectarian facility. L. H. Kaplan offers 40 acres at Mount Kaplan and funds, with a twelve month window to raise necessary money, banks and newspaper offices to receive donations and publish contributor names and amounts daily.
British dispatches from London report a daring plot to kill both the Kaiser and the Tsar at Reval during a joint dining aboard the Kaiser's yacht Hohen Wollern. A five man crew in disguise boarded the Standart, the czar's yacht, but a struggle left the nihilist attacker disarmed. The four others fled in the launch as patrols searched the sea. The ring leader said the aim was to kill both emperors at once.
The viceroy of Sze Chuan reports imperial troops attacked the rebel headquarters at Indianan on August 12. About a thousand rebels were killed and their leader Tong Yu Hang was captured and executed.
The Seventh Day Adventists closed their two week annual conference last night. Elder J. O. Johnson delivered the closing sermon on The Lord's Day, arguing the Sabbath remains God's holy day and must be kept on the seventh day, citing scriptural passages and historical practice. Hon. Joseph F. Johnston, Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Alabama, spoke at the Calhoun county Auditor ium this morning to about four hundred listeners. He defended his record, praised the constitution with caveats, contrasted his tenure with Governor Jelks, and argued for direct election of officials from top to bottom including the railroad commission. The audience reacted with applause and engagement.
Sermons by Rev. John Barnard address labor relations with a focus on mutual respect. He urges employees to protect employer interests, conserve machinery, and avoid time theft, while employers should value workers as humans and treat them kindly, citing Solomon on soft answers. Continued on page 4.
