About six o'clock this morning in Oxford G. W. Luttrell who runs a meat wagon was shot in the side by W. F. Higginbotham as Luttrell drove down McPherson Street. Higginbotham fired without warning, wounding Luttrell in the right side above the hip. Continued on page four.
Washington August 13 President Gompers of the American Federation of Labor said he would use peaceful efforts to aid the Amalgamated Association in its strike. He hoped for amicable settlement and offered cooperation, but declined to discuss further federation stance or a potential executive council meeting.
A stirring call from the Amalgamated Association urges organized labor to support their fight against the United States Steel Corporation. The letter highlights refusals to recognize the union scale and appeals for both broad solidarity and financial aid to fund the campaigning effort.
Four men reported discovering a buried chest about five miles from Porterville on the Mobile and Ohio railroad containing thirty two thousand seventy dollars in Spanish gold. The site in Succam nochee’s ash tree triangle was linked to the Copeland gang legend with wealth buried long ago. Continued on 4th page.
President John B. Knox said in Birmingham the constitutional convention will finish its work and adjourn by mid next week. He expects ratification of the new constitution and does not anticipate an extra legislative session after adoption.
