Electric Railroad Money Ready for Montgomery Line

J W Watts president of the Montgomery Northern Railroad says funds are available to begin construction. He aims to consolidate with the old Anniston and Montgomery Railroad and extend toward the Coosa coal fields. Watts reports favorable conditions and expects work to start soon on the electric line between Anniston and Montgomery.

County Officials Hear Complaints on Tax Assessments

County commissioners in Rion hear residents' complaints about increases in tax assessments by Back Tax Commissioner John S. Mooring. Many taxpayers attend daily sessions in the Annis- Yo City Land company building, with hearings expected to continue across the coming week.

American Troops Hold Line in Batangas Fight

Captain Brown's unit from the 1st United States Land Mounted Regiment engages insurgents in Batangas province near Manila. Cavalry and 21st Infantry repulse assaults, drive enemy from several positions, with two cavalrymen escaping. No enemy dead found, battle lasting about five hours.

Women Taxpayers Gain Vote On City Bond Issues

In Montgomery on August 9 the Constitutional convention backed an amendment allowing all women property owners who meet other qualifications to vote on municipal bond issues. The Craig of Dallas measure passed 65 to 45, amid loud reaction. The original clause requiring a majority of qualified electors to approve bonds stood 65 to 46. A bid to revert to circuit solicitors failed by a tie. another reconsideration is planned by foes who claim a majority.

Strange Fowls Puzzle Athenians

Athens Alabama August 9 report describes a county visit by thousands of large snow white fowls with black wings and short tails that rested on Tennessee river islands near Athens. Some were shot as residents noted no prior sightings and the birds reportedly moved from the northwest toward the south.

Rural mail routes inspected in Calhoun county progress

Rural tree delivery inspector C. C. Tyler visits Aniston to review the seven active routes. Three operate from Aniston, two from Oxford, and two from Jacksonville. Residents praise daily doorstep delivery and time savings, as patronage grows.

Settlement of the big steel strike likely to end soon

Pirraburs August 9. With both sides arming and a general strike near, observers expect a settlement of the great steel strike possibly through arbitration. Arch bishop Ireland and Senators Hanna and Scott named as possible external mediators. President Shaffer met with President Gompers in Pittsburg and the talks yielded no decision. Gompers declined to reveal results. The Steel Corporation presses for a national resolution while labor notes scarce puddlers and skilled workers nationwide.
