Plucky Ox ford Woman Fends Off Chicken Thief
Special to The Star from Oxford reports Mrs John Turner fired a pistol from her home to scare away a chicken thief, likely injuring the intruder. Two dozen fowls vanished from L B Miller’s yard last week and over 20 birds were taken from Dr J C Wright’s hen house, with Mrs Turner’s timely shots credited with saving her flock.
North Carolina Mob Detered by Militia Guarding Jail
In Raleigh on August 8, Greensboro jail guards Company L of the State guard with riot cartridges and orders to shoot to kill to prevent lynching of negroes jailed for B. E. Beacham's murder. A flying mob threat near midnight did not materialize, as noise and rumors of approaching railroad workers failed. Preliminary hearing of the accused is set for Friday.
