Report from London describes General Rundle moving to relieve Wepener as British and Boer forces fight along the hills. Casualties said light with long range fire. Boers allegedly retreating from 8 to 15 guns amid volleys and artillery exchanges.
Blenfontein April 21 report says British command on hills around Boers who hold strong positions likely retiring. Casualties among Yeomanry mounted infantry were light as firing occurred at long range with no British deaths.
Dispatches from Bloemfontein report the Boer assault on Wepener in a critical position with 20 000 Allied troops closing in. About 10 000 Boers are nearly surrounded, leaving little chance of escape or relief.
The Anniston post office has received a full supply of bound books of stamps and they are now on sale. Books of twelve stamps cost 25 cents and 48 stamps cost 97 cents. Each book adds one cent to cover manufacture. The pages hold six stamps and are interleaved with paraffin paper to prevent adhesion.
Loud advertising proclaims spring clothing with low prices on suits. Blue serge, worsted, cassimere and Thibet cloth options range from five to fifteen dollars and include double breasted vests and perfect fittings. Money refunded if not satisfactory. Old and repeated brand mentions appear in the ad.

An enthusiastic A F D volunteer firemen meeting was held at city hall presided by Chief Frank B Brown. They arranged to enter a hand reel race team and other contests to be decided later. Many firefighters from this and other cities will attend the tournament and expect a good time.
Mr John PF Cook has bought a half interest in the wok erage business of Mr W T Owen and will be associated with him after May 1. Mr Owen already runs a good business and with Mr Cook's strength it will likely grow substantially. The combination of these two able businessmen is described as very strong.
Anniston Carpet Co seeks several girls to spool and wind copa every day. Apply in person at 15-4 location for employment.
Dairymen in Calhoun County organize the Calhoun County Dairymen's Association to combat rising feed labor and cattle costs. Officers named are 8. L. Newsome of Oxanna as president and 8. D. Saw yer of Anniston as secretary. They plan a uniform price for milk cream and butter to reflect market rates.
Manila reports thirteen plague deaths in the week and orders around the central market with troops guarding it. Cattle from Singapore bring foot and mouth disease prompting quarantines on stock from that area and existing bans on north Luzon.
The Baptist Young People's Union in session at Union Springs elected officers for the year. President Dr. T. W. Ayers of Aniston, first vice-president Paul F. Dix of Montgomery, second vice-president Francis M. Purifoy of Tuscaloosa, third vice-president Brinson McGorran of Woodlawn, secretary and treasurer Gwylin Herbert of Birmingham. Fresh marshmallows advertised at Dowe's Candy Kitchen.
Dr Bartlett of Sydney reports the plague, carried by the Miowoa passenger, has risen to alarming proportions. It has moved from the tenement district into other city areas and is beyond health authorities’ control, with outbreaks outside the city in multiple colony regions.
