The circuit court convenes in the Anniston City Court Room on Monday with Judge John Pelham presiding. A 20 beat jury list is announced for the first week, naming jurors such as J M Probst, D J Simley, J B HW Lumpkin, TA Pelham, and others across beats one through twenty with several entries truncated.
Louisville April 20 Information says Gov Taylor is indicted as accessory before the fact of the murder of William Goebel. The Franklin county grand jury, after a stormy session, voted ten to two for indictment amid party tension. Indictments were then handed to the clerk without public release.
At the Montgomery state convention Gaston Scott, sergeant at arms for Vaughan, was shot twice by F. L. Moragne, sergeant at arms for Bingham, during a door dispute. Gov. Johnston cleared the capitol and both factions moved to hold separate conventions. Scott’s condition is uncertain but he will likely recover. Vaughan and Bingham were elected state chairmen. no state ticket was nominated as duties shifted to executives.
April 20 New Orleans floods reach calamitous level with at least five hundred travelers stranded. Damages run into millions as rail service stalls on Illinois Central Yazoo Mississippi Valley New Orleans and North Eastern. Four drowned near Meridian and two near Hattiesburg with widespread inundation and destroyed buildings.
Mrs. Bettie J. Jobe filed for divorce from Ike T. Jobe charging desertion. Married in Jonesboro Tennessee in October 1876, the divorce case cites desertion around June 1, 1897. Jobe allegedly posed as a captain, used official envelopes privately, and faced false pretenses in railroad transportation. He reportedly resides in Troy Ohio and was once mayor of Johnson City.
