Atlanta April 12 All telegraph operators on the Southern and Alabama Great Southern Railways were ordered out on a strike this morning. The action will practically tie up traffic on both roads until the dispute between operators and the roads is settled.
At 11 o clock this morning W V Powell president of the Order of Railway Telegraphers issued an order to all members on the Southern and AGS roads to stop work at once and set boards red to protect life. Operators cite low pay and long hours. Several conferences have failed to yield an agreement and the strike could halt regular freight service until replacements are found.
Chattanooga April 12 685 of 816 railway telegraphers on the Southern between Washington and Meridian quit work this morning. Every operator on the Alabama Great Southern struck and only two men remained at the keys in the Atlanta general office.
The president will sign the bill today naming Charles Hallen as Porto Rico’s first governor. Hallen, then assistant secretary of the navy, is expected to assume leadership once confirmed.
None of the Southern offices in Anniston have Order of the Railway Telegraphers members and were not hit by President Powell’s order. Noon trains through the city continued to run on instructions, with rumors that the strike had ended.
Will Crawford, formerly of this city, was arrested in Atlanta last night on charges of stealing a $150 diamond from A. C. Weisiger of Richmond, who was a guest at the Aragon hotel.
A four story warehouse of Armstrong McKelvey White Lead Works collapsed in Pittsburg after heavy rains softened the earth. About thirty workers were inside. six killed including Noel Casper and D Bernard. Twelve injured and four buried in ruins. A wall fell into the street.
A Bohemian landslide buries forty two houses while Bowling Green is wiped out by fire. Miners in Curtisville and Aberdeen threaten to blow up mines if shut. In Korea Russia resumes demands to Korea over Masampo. Reports say Kumassi’s English governor may be a prisoner and five Fortieth Hussars officers killed in combat.
Bloemfontein reports indicate Boers east of the Free State border pressure leaders Kruger and Steyn to use active commands. Burghers refuse quiet service, seeking engagement as they suspect British waiting game. Possible plan to tie down Roberts to protect the railroad and recapture Bloemfontein.
The Star will publish a larger edition with about six columns of special Easter matter and handsome illustrations. Telegraph and local news service remain, plus Master advertising. Advertisers should submit copy early to fit this expanded issue.
Florence April 12 General Wheeler intends to vacate the eighth Alabama district and an election may be ordered. A letter from Wheeler to W M Bunting describes no immediate action by Governor Johnston and says Judge Wood is absent while Paul Hodges considers a district committee meeting in Decatur.
Hon. Jos. J. Willett will leave Monday for Brooklyn where on Wednesday he is to deliver the principal address at a notable gathering of Eastern Democrats. The event, postponed from Friday, will feature the fight against Bryan in favor Van Wyck.
April 12 reports from Plandslaagte say Boer forces renewed the assault on Buller at the Elandslaagte position continuing today with renewed fighting and artillery activity.
London April 12. Thirty five thousand Boers await Roberts first move toward Pretoria. They are posted on hills between Kroonstadt and Winsburg with ninety guns. Every kopje is fortified.

Garrett Knott and J F Price were bound over to the grand jury after capture by revenue officers in Cleburne county. Knott posted 200 bond and was released. Price secured 300 bond but remained in jail. Commissioner Randolph oversaw hearings.
