The Pretoria dispatch via Delagoa Bay states a battle south of Brandfort left 600 British soldiers killed or wounded and 800 captured while Lord Roberts struggles with water scarcity. The report appeared in the Daily News dated April 11.
Gen Roberts notes Boer activity along the Orange river near Aliwal North and an attack on Wepner. The Wepner garrison resists with heavy Boer losses. one British officer dead with no other casualties. Troops move up rapidly. Mer katsfontein reports and Brandfort rumors are discredited. More troops reach Wepner.
Aliwal North reports fighting resumes this morning over Wepner as Boer commanders surround Brabant and renew shelling. It marks the third day of the battle with heavy bombardment continuing.
London April 11 Gen Gatacre recalled in disgrace after defeat by the Boers. Gen Germside appointed to command the Eleventh division.
A Boer force opposite Donker's Hook has been sniping across the river, with two British officers shot from near a farmhouse. Dickson's cavalry is quartered nearby.
Report says thirty Boers concealed themselves in a farm house where a white flag flew signaling surrender. Details on location and ensuing actions were not provided.
Ladysmith reports Boer forces opened fire on the Elansgaate camp from three distant positions but caused no damage. British reconnoitering troops found Boers in strong, fortified numbers as the naval gun answered their Long Tom emplacement.
A British army purchasing agent arrives in Buffalo to inspect 30,000 to 35,000 horses in western states. The plan is to acquire about 1,000 daily for shipment to South Africa, with each vessel carrying that number of horses.
Alonzo Gilbert and Willie Knighton wed secretly at the Ammons home on Cottage Row after eloping from her mother opposition. The bride was returned home by her mother and brother, who had Gilbert arrested for carrying concealed weapons. He was fined 490 in police court.
Deputy collectors and marshals from Anniston Edwardsville and nearby areas raided a large illicit distillery in Cleburne county near the Georgia Alabama line. About three thousand gallons of beer and equipment were seized. Garrett Knott and J F Price were arrested and jailed for trial before Commissioner Randolph after witnesses arrive from Clebourne.
Reports show a heavy snow in central and western Kansas with ten inches at Larned. The Missouri Pacific Railroad orders snow plows prepared for Northwestern lines as snow continues to fall.

Mr. W. F. Higgins, Beat 13 committeeman, calls a mass meeting in Oxford Armory Saturday at 2 PM to select delegates for the Democratic county convention in Oxford next Wednesday.

London reports Richard Croker has vanished from view and is said to have traveled to New York to meet Tammany leaders about their failure to back Dewey.
Omaha reports a fire at the Transportation Building on the exposition grounds early this morning. The blaze damaged the structure and prompted an emergency response to contain the flames. No injuries are listed in the fragment, and crews worked through the night to assess damage.
The Ohio association of Democratic clubs opened its annual convention at the Great Southern hotel in Columbus and will continue tomorrow. Each club is represented by two delegates at large and one for every twenty five members. Dewey's presidential candidacy is not taken seriously.
Prosecutors reveal Henry Youtsey and others described a 38 caliber Marlin used to kill William Goebel. The steel bullet passed through the body and lodged in a tree later cut down. The rifle is a latest pattern using smokeless powder similar to Krag rifles. The cartridge ball is in James Howard’s possession and a warrant is issued for his arrest as he faces possible trial in Frankfort.
In Raleigh North Carolina on April 11 the Democratic state convention met and announced Charles B Aycock will be nominated for governor.
The British steamer Dunston arrived from Manaos and Bara reporting a death from yellow fever. The vessel has been quarantined and disinfected due to the infection aboard.
