Convention Hall to be rebuilt after fire loss

Kansas City April 5 The great hall for the Democratic National convention was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon but the convention will still be held. Plans are underway to rebuild the hall immediately for the July gathering. Members of the Commercial club led fundraising efforts with a mass meeting planned to raise about 50 000. The hall association reports 10 000 cash on hand and 155 000 in sight with insurers waiving a sixty day limit to settle.

Boer Repel Two Simultaneous Attacks Near Pretoria

Dispatch from Pretoria reports sharp fighting yesterday as Col Plumers cavalry and the Mateking garrison attacked the Boer lines. Both assaults were repulsed with twenty of Plumers men killed and six taken prisoner in the sortie.

At a citizens meeting at First National Bank most of the last 10,000 capital stock was raised and guaranteed. A second meeting is planned to elect officers and arrange site selection, machinery purchase, and construction for immediate operation of the mill.

Brussels April 5 The examination of Sipido, the would be assassin of the Prince of Wales, showed the crime was premeditated. Sipido was urged by an unknown adviser to buy a revolver. He refused to name his companion.

A large blaze in south Macon Georgia began around 4 o clock this morning. Nine residences were burned, with some insured and others not. The origin of the fire and total damage are not yet known.

Eli A Walker Sr died yesterday at his home on Seven teenth Street at seventy five after a lingering illness. He leaves a wife four sons and two daughters including K E A Walker Jr of Oxford T Kirk Walker of Augusta GA M T Walker of Rockville Conn J P Wakefield of Alexandria G H Wakefield of Jenifer and Bynum Walker of this city. Funeral services were held at 11 this morning at the residence conducted by Rev Bd Wasson and interment followed at the old family burying ground at Bynum. Many friends and relatives mourn the loss.

Mrs Mary Hodge Dies After Illness at Son's Home

Mrs Mary Hodge died yesterday while working at her son As A Hodge's home on West Fourteenth Street. She had been in frail health for some time and her life honored by many deeds. The funeral was held today at noon in Hillside Cemetery with Rev John K Barnard officiating.

Weather bulletin from Cheyenne Wyoming reports a great snow storm dated April fifth. Snow has fallen since Tuesday and nearly fifteen inches cover the ground. The storm is general in southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska with railroad traffic delayed but not seriously interrupted. Lightning accompanied the snowfall.

Officer Adams Buried Today in Oak Hill Cemetery

The remains of Officer J. H. Adams were laid to rest beside Officer George W. Kirkley in Oak Hill cemetery. The Birmingham department mourns the untimely deaths of two of its best members and a monument fund has been started for their graves.

Recovered British Troops Bring London Jubilation

Ninety one troops captured by the Boers at Bloemfontein water works have been recovered by Col Porter. Their names are not known but likely belong to the Tenth Hussars Household Cavalry. London rejoices this morning.

Train Wreck Near Channing Thousands Burned Coaches

Fort Worth and Denver passenger train wrecked by a washout near Channing Texas. The southbound train caught fire and burned all but one coach. Seven people were killed including a Wells Fargo messenger and a fireman was burned. A special train with doctors was sent to the scene.
