Special to the Star from San Francisco reports a fierce morning fire in Maiden Lane injuring twenty four New York fire workers. The blazed lodging house for Italians burned rapidly with many inmates killed or hospitalized. A steamship Jamestown was damaged by the same blaze.
A Maiden Lane fire caused an explosion early today injuring 24 firemen, four seriously. Chief Coker and Deputy Chief Guerin were among those slightly hurt.
Fire swept the cargo of the Old Dominion line steamship James town in Norfolk as it was discharged from New York. The freight including paper coffee and huts was ruined and the ship sustained light damage after a longshoremen strike delayed unloading.
Visitors from across the country attended the Carlisle Indian School commencement exercises held in Carlisle Pennsylvania on April 4 marking the annual graduation event.
Washington April 4. If E H Harriman answers questions today there may be new developments at the interstate commerce commission hearing. Absent further testimony, counsel will proceed and the commission's report goes to the attorney general. Action under the Sherman act toward dissolving the Union Pacific Southern Pacific agreement is expected on grounds of restraint of trade.
Bids for the Thompson levee about 40 miles above the city on the Red river and for the levee near Picket station 10 miles above will be opened here tomorrow. The Thompson levee will hold about 32 000 cubic yards of earth and the Picket station levee about 35 000 yards.
Rain is forecast late tonight and Friday for Anniston and vicinity. The outlook calls for chances of showers with cool temperatures across the area. Expect damp conditions and light winds as sprinkles move through the region.
The Thaw lunacy commission reported Thaw sane and the murder trial of Stanford White will resume from the interruption. The commission’s unanimous report spurred a session with Justice Fitzgerald and brought hope to Mrs Thaw and the Countess of Yarmouth as spectators watched.

The chief contest is between Joe Dill and former Chief J M Sweets for police chief. Most salaries are not expected to change next year.
Highlights show Postmaster J M Ragan under scrutiny for a $2608.45 shortage with Frank Roberts tied as potential co-respondent. Inspectors Barry Barker and D H Smith checked accounts using Washington data while awaiting final exact figures to determine possible embezzlement penalties up to ten years in prison.
In Florence on April 4 a German peddler sold so called royal pink seeds to local women. Buyers planted them expecting pinks but the sprouts proved onions, producing a humorous twist as husbands teased and some wives offered to skip Easter bonnets to keep quiet.
In Lynchburg Virginia on April 4 a minor race clash at Fifth and Main left two white men and two black men shot. Four black assailants attacked three white men who were jostled into the gutter. after a quarrel shots rang out ten or more times, a passing streetcar was struck several times.
In Havana on April 4 Governor Mago on ordered an inquiry into the death of Jose Rafael Ayala former Gaines police chief and moderate rebel. Ayala who fled to Mexico after losing his post returned to ignite a revolution and was shot by eight African American assailants as he left his home Tuesday night. About 100 American soldiers are on site to quell unrest.
Alabama Supreme Court returns decisions from Anniston cases including Azonia Gobble versus W T Owens reversed and remanded and Sarah Galliher versus State Mutual Life Insurance Company reversed and remanded An Anniston area case Yolande Deyva from Gadsden City court is reversed and remanded in the lower court’s ruling.
Private advices from reliable authority indicate no general strike by western trainmen. Some smaller line strikes are expected within the next month or two due to unresolved conference negotiations.
The Birmingham city council voted to raise the mayor's salary from 2500 to 5000 a year. Two aldermen opposed the increase in the April 4 meeting.
New statistics show the Pennsylvania system covers 11 081 miles of line and 23 109 miles of track, comprising 7 2 percent of the nation’s total track mileage.

The tugboat Paul Jones reports the loss of the schooner Thomas W. Lawson in a gale off Cape Lookout. The wreck occurred after the hawser parted while the vessel, loaded with oil, was in tow with a full crew aboard.
Police arrested four people in Montgomery in connection with the motormen and conductors strike. One youth was caught loitering while soap ing, claiming persuasion by others. Other arrests were for disorderly conduct as shots into cars last night remain una assigned. Cars ran as usual today.

United States Senator Rayner endorsed Senator Daniel of Virginia for the Democratic nomination in 1908. He said the railroad issue would lead the next campaign and named Taft Foraker Knox and Root as strong Republicans, with Vice President Fairbanks closest to the goal at present.
