Pickens county teachers will receive back the four thousand dollars stolen from the Reform express company safe last Friday. The express company will immediately replace the funds, ensuring salary payments without delay. Continued on fourth page.
Dispatches report General Botha and General DeWet leading a force of 13,000 against General French. About two hundred Boers reappear near Richmond in Cape Colony, prompting a town guard call to defend the settlement.
An Anniston trades council and an Anniston branch of the American Federation of Labor are to be organized next Saturday night. Organizer I L Sawyer called the meeting today, to be held in the room over the old bowling alley on South Noble Street.
The bar mill at the Anniston Rolling Mill company began operations today, adding ten to twelve skilled workers. The guide mill remains inactive and is planned to start within a few days.
Oxford's new mayor T A Howle and council were sworn in and held their first meeting. Old officers filed annual reports showing strong finances and full bond payments. Committees were named including Street, Sanitary, Water, Finance, and Auditing with members O W Cooper and W A Orr among appointees. A Snow Creek bridge project was approved in principle with county officials.
Mrs P L Cordier of Manning ton Kentucky says her three year old daughter was given up to die from croup by a doctor. After using Foley's Honey and Tar the first dose provided quick relief and saved the child’s life.
The Calhoun County Medical Society met at noon in the city hall to review membership status and revise wall records. Dr. W. B. Arbery reported on surgical cases while Dr. Whiteside presented the county death rate of 7.11 per thousand and city rate of 11.10 per thousand. Delegates for the State Medical Society meeting in Selma on April 16 will be announced by Dr. E. C. Anderson. The gathering adjourned with plans to reconvene on the first Tuesday in July.
From London April 2 Dr Morejaom reports Li Hung Chang urged the Emperor to sign but was told the throne’s decision is irrevocable. The Manchurian convention cannot be signed despite protests. Negotiations between Ti Teng Chang and M De Giers continue with formal amendments.
