Anita area notices and wartime marriage update

Ida C Campbell of Dormont marries Private Thomas J Henderson of Parnassus at Camp Merritt New Jersey on July 23. The couple plans overseas service and Mrs Henderson will reside in Dormont if permitted to do so. Local items report troop movements, furloughs, and a community defense council meeting amid World War I mobilization.

Anita Council approves land addition for city water works

At a June 17, 1918 special meeting the Anita Town Council unanimously resolved to condemn Lot Twelve in Jenkins Addition for a water works expansion. The fair market value is set at 1800 dollars and the owner will be offered that amount. if refused, steps will be taken to condemn under law.

No More Free Newspapers From Anita Publisher

The government orders end free RECORD copies to soldiers in training camps. Anita area soldiers who have received the paper at publisher expense must subscribe or lose the free issue after September 1. Publisher warns against postal rule violations and will discontinue the service unless subscriptions are arranged.

Enlistment of Roy Workman and Lloyd Roe Felt to Serve

Roy Workman of Rock Island Station and Lloyd Roe, Citizens' Savings Bank book-keeper, enlisted in the quartermaster's division in Des Moines last week. They will depart August 19 for Camp Logan Colorado and later serve on the east coast. Lee Hubbell, hoping to enlist, was told to stay and continue his current work.

Will Have Plenty of Water for City Use

The city council acts to prevent water shortage by sinking a three-foot well, thirty feet deep, at West Main street with continuous pumping. The system replacement from northeast Anita expands supply without city-wide drawdown. A notice arrived of Oscar Bartley, formerly Route 4 rural mail carrier, being severely wounded in France.

Obituary of Registe Sophia Martin Nelson

Registe Sophia Margaret Nelson born January 2 1849 in Aalborg Denmark died August 1 1918 at her home in Oakland Iowa at age 69 years 6 months 29 days. She married Peter Martin July 3 1871 in Tidinte Pennsylvania and had six children four sons two daughters died in infancy. Surviving sons Andrew C Martin Marti Utah Lewis M Atlantic Iowa Arthur Greenfield Iowa and Rev Peter T Ontario Canada. The family lived in Pennsylvania Avoca Oakland Minden Anita before returning to Oakland in 1912. She joined the Baptist church early then United Evangelical in Anita and was devoted wife and mother. She suffered a stroke July 28 and died after a period of decline. Funeral July 6 conducted by P H Green Oakland. Hymns by Mrs O D Floyd and Mrs Al M Armstrong. Remains were taken to Anita for burial.
